A new comic book day is once again upon us, and there is no shortage of fantastic books to choose from. Whether you're into big superhero epics (Superman, Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), introspective character dives (Wonder Woman), edge-of-your-seat horror-tinged adventures (Feral, Something is Killing the Children), or summer-blockbusters (Blood Hunt, Pooh vs Bambi), there's something that will hook you, and we're breaking them all down on this week's new episode of ComicBook Nation's The Pull List, which you can listen to right here. You can also find out the highlights of the week below.

Highlights of the Week

It was a great week overall in terms of quality and fun, but there were a few books that especially stood out, including Wonder Woman #9 and Blood Hunt #2. They couldn't be more different from each other, but that also makes them the perfect one-two punch. Wonder Woman #9 moves the relationship between Diana and Steve Trevor into the spotlight as Diana continues to endure the trials of the Sovereign, and it opens up a host of discussions regarding what Trevor has meant to Wonder Woman in the past, what he means now, and his importance (or perhaps lack thereof) to Wonder Woman's story overall.

Blood Hunt #2 on the other hand is a summer blockbuster at its finest, delivering an action-stuffed issue with real stakes and genuine tension throughout. By the way, the work Pepe Larraz and Marte Gracia are creating right now is truly unreal, and the mix of characters and creativity in how they are used is becoming one of the series' strongest elements.

On the complete other side of the summer blockbuster scale is Pooh vs. Bambi #2, an absurdly fun series that has already won over both hosts. While it doesn't have the depth of something like eBlood Hunt, it also doesn't need to, and it leans into its fantastical premise in interesting and often bloody ways.

Speaking of bloody, there's plenty of that in Something is Killing the Children #37, but that's ultimately not why it's one of my favorite issues of the series to date. While the issue is a self-contained tale for the most part, the character pairing of Erica and the girl she is protecting is just brilliant, and their banter and exchanges can't help but make you wish we had more of their adventures to see down the road. That's probably not the case, but even if this is just for one issue, they absolutely steal the show.

Feral does as well, and though it was Janell's introduction to the series, she couldn't help but be swept away in the tension-filled Aristocats meets The Walking Dead adventure. More answers can't come soon enough, and hopefully, some hope lives around the corner after the harrowing journey they've experienced to this point.

Superman also impresses with the fourth chapter of House of Brainiac, once again delivering on previous threads while also moving the characters forward in intriguing ways, all in the midst of a superhero throwdown that looks stunning. Oh, and Queen Brainiac, well, she's something else entirely. You can check out everything we had to say about all this week's books right here, and you can find all of the books we discussed below.

Trade Watch

Not done yet! Trades also hit this week, and one in particular that deserves some shine is Mad Cave Studios' Edenfrost. The four-issue series can now be read all in one place, and the story of two siblings and a powerful mystical Golem that defends their bloodline offers something very different from anything else on stands. It's a tale of family and magic that you won't want to miss, and you can check out the official description below.

"After losing their parents in a pogrom, teenage siblings Alex and Yuli use the mystical power of a Golem to survive the chaos of the Russian Civil War. In a harrowing journey through war-torn Ukraine, the duo will face the harsh reality of warfare, ethnic bias, and national pride as they fight for their place in the world."

Power Rangers Needs an Animated Series More Than Ever https://comicbook.com/anime/news/power-rangers-anime-animated-series/ Wed, 22 May 2024 21:41:00 +0000 Megan Peters 373f74fd-9555-4ba6-ba3a-a73929306f8c

It would be wrong to call the Power Rangers anything but an institution. Over the decades, the franchise has welcomed millions of fans into the sentai club. From its original outing to its latest series, Power Rangers has done it all. And now, the IP is going viral all thanks to one fan's animated take on the heroes.

As you can see above, the work comes courtesy of Dominic Estephane. The talented animator hit up YouTube with a special project titled The Morphing Grid: A Power Rangers Anthology. The trailer brings the world of Power Rangers to life using animation, and it is nothing short of stunning.

According to Estephane, they tapped into several specific pieces of Power Rangers lore to create their tribute. Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers season two was high on the list along with Leo and Space. These specific series helped the artist refine an "anime" inspired style with "Genndy Tartakovsky" ties, and the result is gorgeous.

Honestly? It is hard to imagine a Power Rangers anime or animated series looking better than this. We need this kind of content in our veins ASAP.

Of course, the Power Rangers fandom is going nuts over this pitch, and social media is spreading word around. This tribute comes at the perfect time as the Power Rangers are making headlines thanks to a certain anime. This year, the hit sentai anime Go, Go, Loser Ranger debuted to critical acclaim. The anime, which is ongoing, brings the best of sentai storytelling to life while giving it a dose of grit. The anime's success has put a renewed focus on the OG Power Rangers, and thanks to this new trailer, netizens are ready to beg for a full-blown animated series.

Playmates Takes Over Power Rangers Toys License https://comicbook.com/powerrangers/news/playmates-takes-over-power-rangers-toys-license/ Sat, 18 May 2024 22:01:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar 0179c846-2400-42bb-a154-95afbd0f1d0e

A new era of Power Rangers began in 2018 when the Power Rangers franchise was acquired from Sagan Brands by Hasbro, and since then we've seen a variety of action figures, toys, and television shows under that umbrella. Now a new era is set to begin on the entertainment side, but another new era is beginning on the toys side as well, as Hasbro has announced a global licensing agreement with Playmates Toys. Playmates Toys will produce and distribute Power Rangers products moving forward, with the first wave happening in 2025 with the launch of a new kid-targeted Mighty Morphin Power Rangers line.

Under the new deal, Playmates will hold licensing rights to develop additional cross-category Power Rangers products, including action figures, blasters, plush, role play, vehicles, and accessories. Playmates will distribute across all regions except for Asia.

While Playmates will handle the toy side of things, Hasbro will retain the entertainment rights and will work with licensees across multiple categories to drive its global strategy for the brand. That includes publishing, fashion, footwear, promotions, and more. Hasbro will also feature Power Rangers on Hasbro Pulse and as part of its presence at events like San Diego Comic-Con.

"We are honored to work with Hasbro on the reimagination of this iconic franchise's toy line for long time fans and a new generation of children. Playmates and Hasbro speak the same toy language and share a passion for POWER RANGERS, a multi-generational phenomenon that has stood the test of time," said Karl Aaronian, Playmates' SVP of Marketing.

"Playmates' ability to interpret character-based story telling in highly detailed, innovative, and affordable products has revitalized several iconic brands, they are the perfect fit to fully expand the POWER RANGERS franchise," said Casey Collins, President of Licensed Consumer Products at Hasbro. "While we'll continue to provide oversight and direction on future POWER RANGERS product ranges, Playmates will leverage its action figure and accessory design, development and marketing expertise to create an entirely new play and collecting experience for fans of all ages. With two powerhouse companies coming together to support a powerhouse brand, the potential is limitless!"

Power Rangers just celebrated its 30th Anniversary last year, which ushered in Power Rangers: Once & Always and Power Rangers Cosmic Fury on Netflix. The BOOM! Studios comics also continue to thrive in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Ranger Academy, and the recent launch of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return miniseries.

Playmates Toys already handles several beloved properties, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Miraculous, Godzilla x Kong, and Star Trek. Now Power Rangers will be joining that mix, and it remains to be seen if things like the Lightning Collection will continue or if Playmates will launch another similar high-articulation line of figures.

X-Men '97 Finale Breakdown & Season 2 Preview, IF (2024) Review https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/x-men-97-finale-breakdown-season-2-preview-if-2024-review/ Fri, 17 May 2024 21:16:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 2bb428ab-d1ca-4dc5-83c5-78dd8ba7f7b1

IF (2024) Review

ComicBook critic Jamie Jirak's IF movie review gives the film 3.5 out of 5 stars:

The film does a good job of reminding its audience that there's a kid in all of us, and that time can never truly take away your imagination. It's been a while since I looked around in a theater and saw multiple grown men shedding a tear. Krasinski knows how to appeal to parents, especially dads. While IF may not be a perfectly pieced-together movie, there's enough heart embedded in its core to make it a worthy trip to the cinema for families. The cast is delightful, the IFs are magical, and the warmth is undeniable.
