Inside Out 2 is about the personified emotions inside the mind of 13-year-old Riley. But to Pixar, which will open the sequel nine years after the $858 million-grossing original on June 14, it's the first test of a recent rethink: getting it into heads that Pixar's movies won't be available to stream on Disney+ until after a long exclusive theatrical window.

Pixar president Jim Morris told Bloomberg that Inside Out 2 will screen for at least 100 days in theaters, more than doubling the 47-day window of 2022's Lightyear ($226.4 million) and surpassing the 89-day wait for 2023's Elemental ($496.4 million) to arrive on Disney+. (A slow-burner at the box office, the animated romcom was Disney+'s biggest movie premiere since Pixar's own Turning Red and went on to top the Nielsen streaming movies chart when it eventually landed on the streamer after three months in theaters.)

Bloomberg
notes that then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek's decision to have three Pixar movies bypass theaters for Disney+ during the pandemic -- 2020's Soul, 2021's Luca, and 2022's Turning Red -- "trained audiences to expect Pixar pictures to premiere on their phones and in their homes instead of in cinemas." All three movies only received theatrical releases earlier this year.

"I hope that we will not release another feature film on Disney+," Morris said. "If we do more stuff for Disney+, it should be a series, and then that makes a clean demarcation between what we do for theaters and what we do for streaming." Pixar's first animated TV series, Win or Lose, will premiere later this year on Disney+, followed by an Inside Out spinoff series, Dream Productions, in 2025.

In 2023, Pete Docter, Pixar's chief creative officer and director of Soul, said that the movie was made for the big screen but was sent to streaming at a time when theaters were shuttered during the COVID pandemic.

"In the long run, there's been a bit of a mixed blessing because we've trained audiences that these films will be available for you on Disney+," Docter told Variety during Elemental's opening weekend. "And it's more expensive for a family of four to go to a theater when they know they can wait and it'll come out on the platform. We're trying to make sure people realize there's a great deal you're missing by not seeing it on the big screen. In the case of Elemental, it's a beautiful spectacle, there's detail everywhere. I think you feel it more and it's a better experience. There's the shared experience as well, that you get to see it in a room with strangers, and there's something about the energy that comes from other people that makes the whole experience more vibrant and interesting."

Morris also teased plans for potential third installments of Pixar's Incredibles and Finding Nemo franchises as part of its strategy to balance original movies -- like Elio, out next summer -- with more spinoffs and sequels like Toy Story 5, dated for June 2026. Inside Out 2 opens only in theaters June 14.

Ghost of Tsushima Movie Reportedly Looking to Cast Shogun's Hiroyuki Sanada https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/ghost-of-tsushima-movie-hiroyuki-sanada-report/ Mon, 03 Jun 2024 00:41:00 +0000 Logan Moore 1a5d6786-1cc6-4fd1-9cdd-2253e9ba2359

PlayStation's movie adaptation of the video game Ghost of Tsushima may have found its first cast member in Shogun star Hiroyuki Sanada. Back in 2021, PlayStation Productions first announced that it had partnered with John Wick series director Chad Stahelski to create a film iteration of Ghost of Tsushima. Since then, no other major announcements tied to the project have come about, which has left fans with more questions than answers. Fortunately, it sounds as though the movie's development has progressed far enough to where it might now begin casting starting with Sanada.

According to @DanielRPK, Hiroyuki Sanda is currently in talks to star in Ghost of Tsushima. For the time being, it's not known which role Sanda would play in the movie, but many fans have already found him to have a number of similarities to the character Lord Shimura. In the Ghost of Tsushima game, Shimura is the uncle of the main protagonist, Jin Sakai, and ends up playing a pivotal part in the events of its story.

One reason why Sanda's potential casting in Ghost of Tsushima makes a lot of sense is because he has previously worked with director Chad Stahelski. Specifically, Sanada starred in 2023's John Wick 4, which was his most recent role on the big screen. With Stahelski in charge of the Ghost of Tsushima movie, it makes sense that he would potentially want to work with Sanada once again given how well their previous collaboration went.

In the near term, Sanada is set to reprise his role as Scorpion in Mortal Kombat 2, which is poised to hit theaters in 2025. This year, Sanada received widespread acclaim for playing Lord Yoshii Toranaga in FX's Shogun. Following the success of Shogun, FX went on to greenlight two additional seasons of the historical drama, but whether or not Sanada will return in any of these episodes isn't known.

For now, PlayStation Productions has provided no release window for the Ghost of Tsushima movie. If Sanada does become attached to the film soon, though, there's a good chance we'll start to learn more about when filming might begin. A video game sequel to Ghost of Tsushima is also widely expected to be in development, although developer Sucker Punch Productions has yet to confirm as much.

Maria De Aragon, Original Star Wars Greedo Actress, Dies at 81 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/maria-de-aragon-death-star-wars-greedo-actress/ Mon, 03 Jun 2024 00:36:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 2522a1b1-a2ae-4f87-9266-359a512a09bf

An important force in creating one of the most iconic scenes in all of Star Wars has sadly passed away. Actress Maria De Aragon was behind the mask of Greedo in George Lucas' original Star Wars film in 1977. She and Harrison Ford combined to great the infamous "Han Shoots Greedo" sequence that has become the subject of much change and debate over the years.

According to management company Coolwaters Productions, De Aragon died earlier this year at the age of 81, passing away in April of natural causes.

The company shared a statement on Instagram that confirmed the news of De Aragon's passing, and told the story of how she came to join the film as the actor beneath Greedo's mask.

"Coolwaters Productions LLC is sad to report that our client Ms. Maria De Aragon, the actress who helped bring the character of Greedo to life in Star Wars: A New Hope has passed away," the company said in a statement. "Maria is also known for other films such as Teenager, Wonder Women, and The Cremators. Maria shot her role as Greedo in Los Angeles, California after the principal photography in London UK was finished and George Lucas was not happy with the way the original footage turned out. The character needed to seem more animated. In the close-ups of Greedo speaking, Maria donned the creature mask, creating the memorable face to face confrontation with Han Solo. Maria has expressed during many Q&A/panels when asked 'What do you think of Harrison Ford' she would respond, 'He kills me' (with a laugh).

"She leaves behind her family in Canada. She passed away at a nursing home at the age of 81 in late April 2024 of natural causes. Our hearts are saddened, and we wish her family the very best and we thank all her Star Wars fans for years of support."

The original Star Wars is the only film in the franchise that featured De Aragon's work. She also appeared in films like The Cremators, Wonder Women, and Street Wars.

Superman: James Gunn Shares New Set Photo https://comicbook.com/movies/news/superman-james-gunn-shares-new-set-photo/ Mon, 03 Jun 2024 00:31:00 +0000 Haley Miller 4d703173-913f-42a3-83b1-f95c6376bae3

The new Superman film which is set to be the dawn of a new era of the DCU is currently filming but director James Gunn continues to keep the hype surrounding the film alive. Gunn recently shared a photo of David Corenswet suited up for the first time with his trunks on the outside as opposed to the more modern interpretations of the character, adding even more excitement. Now he's posted a snap with a few other cast members -- including Nathan Fillion who will play Guy Gardner/Green Lantern and Skyler Gisondo who's taking on the mantle of Jimmy Olsen. "Hanging on the set of #Superman with some of my favorite people," Gunn captioned the photo. Gunn recently confirmed on his Instagram that filming on the project is a little over halfway done.

What is Superman About?

Per DC Studios, Superman will tell the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and a better tomorrow, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

Alongside Corenswet, Fillion and Gisondo, rounding out the cast of Superman: Legacy is Rachel Brosnahan as Clark's better half Lois Lane, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Mar?a Gabriela de Far?a as Angela Spica/The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho.

DC's New Era

When it was revealed that the DCU would be getting a hard reset and Gunn's Superman film would be the first major project under the new banner, fans were understandably a little apprehensive, but even more so when it was announced that Henry Cavill wouldn't be returning as Clark Kent because Gunn was looking to go in a different direction. The Guardians of the Galaxy director aimed to ease fans minds about the plans he has for DC moving forward and how he's not looking to make it like Marvel.

"A lot of people think it's going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel. I think that we have a lot of differences," Gunn explained. "We are telling a big, huge, central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we're a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we've gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we're also creating a universe that is like Star Wars, where there's different times, different places, different things, or Game of Thrones, where characters are a little bit more morally complex."

Beetlejuice: Michael Keaton Calls Merchandise of Character "F--king Weird" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/beetlejuice-michael-keaton-calls-merchandise-of-character-f-king-weird/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 21:36:00 +0000 Haley Miller 8d37594e-eef5-4b3e-8e8e-861aaa6081c6

This fall Warner Bros. Pictures will release the highly-anticipated followup to the cult classic Beetlejuice, also known as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The movie comes over three decades after Michael Keaton graced the screens as the hysterical miscreant in Tim Burton's film and the two, alongside Oscar nominee Winona Ryder and two-time Emmy winner Catherine O'Hara, are reuniting once more.

The hype surrounding the film is electric as new generations of fans look forward to seeing what shenanigans are cooked up in the sequel. As with any huge pop culture phenomena, Over the years the franchise has produced some pretty questionable merchandise which Keaton acknowledges in an interview with Empire.

"There's been so much merchandising of it, I had to drop back to where it started," he said. "I had to go, 'What was my unusual imagination even thinking about when I was developing it in the first place?' As opposed to seeing a coffee mug or a golf-club cover [adorned with Betelgeuse's face]." The ubiquity of Beetlejuice as a character in the culture created its own challenges. "That was fucking weird," admits Keaton. "To be honest with you - I'm being very frank - it was off-putting, to look and go, 'I don't want to look like all these little things, fuck that - what was the thing that started this?'"

In the recently released trailer, the movie confirmed that it would be set around the death of Charles Deetz played by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Jones. This time around, the pic will meet Jenna Ortega (Netflix's Wednesday) who plays Lydia's rebellious teenage daughter Astrid. The Deetz return home to Winter River but things go awry when Astrid starts poking around.

Per the synopsis, "Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his own brand of mayhem." Alongside Ortega, it has been previously confirmed that Beetlejuice's wife, played by Monica Belluci, as well as Danny Devito will also have roles in the film, though Devito's sounds like it'll be more of a cameo.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opens in theaters September 6, 2024. Stay tuned to Comicbook for updates on the film.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Producer Says Sony Sequel Won't Use AI https://comicbook.com/movies/news/spider-man-beyond-the-spider-verse-chris-lord-sony-ai/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 21:20:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 40766aee-fa85-4da3-9744-0637416b98e3

With great technology comes great responsibility. But Sony Animation's Spider-Verse movies -- which thwipped up a Best Animated Feature Oscar for 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and a second nomination for 2023's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse -- won't be using AI-generated animation in the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

"There is no generative AI in Beyond the Spider-Verse and there never will be," series producer Chris Miller wrote on X in response to a fan urging Sony Animation not to use generative artificial intelligence on the sequel. "One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists' work."

Miller's response comes days after Tony Vinciquerra, the chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, was quoted saying that the studio is "very focused on AI" and will use the content-creating technology to cut costs and streamline productions.

"The biggest problem with making films today is the expense," Vinciquerra told investors at a conference in Japan (via The Hollywood Reporter). "We will be looking at ways to...produce both films for theaters and television in more efficient ways, using AI primarily."

Vinciquerra acknowledged that the use of AI was a major hurdle in the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes and the ongoing negotiations with IATSE, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, the union that represents more than 168,000 workers in various arts, media, and entertainment crafts.

"The agreements that came out of last year's strikes and the agreements that will come out of the IATSE and Teamster [negotiations] will define roughly what we do with AI," Vinciquerra said.

This isn't the first time Miller and his producing partner and co-writer, Phil Lord, have spoken out against generative AI in the making of animated movies.

"The AI isn't going to generate something new and original," Miller told Fortune last year. "It's going to just do an imitation of the things that came before it. It's our job as humans to keep making things new." At a November press conference, Miller expanded on his criticism to say that AI should only be used "as a tool to simplify some drudgery" in the process of creating the creative -- but not the actual creation.

"It doesn't have the ability to innovate," Miller was quoted saying, adding that AI is "a copying machine" and "an imitator, not an innovator."

Kaiju No. 8 Creator Says Shin Godzilla Inspired the Hit Series https://comicbook.com/anime/news/kaiju-no-8-anime-shin-godzilla/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 21:07:00 +0000 Megan Peters 0bf29460-5e7a-4962-b565-e3ce34ea6842

Right now, the anime industry is running through its spring season, and some clear hits have climbed the charts since launching this year. As the summer season nears, shows like Kaiju No. 8 are standing out thanks to their impressive hype. From animation to pacing, Kaiju No. 8 has become a go-to series for netizens this spring, and it turns out the story's creator was inspired to pen Kaiju No. 8 thanks to Godzilla.

Yes, you read that right. The King of the Monsters helped put Kaiju No. 8 on track. While speaking with Bunshin in Japan, artist Naoya Matsumoto broke down their history with Kaiju No. 8, and it was there the creator gave a shoutout to Shin Godzilla.

After all, it turns out the Hideaki Anno film greatly inspired Matsumoto to ink Kaiju No. 8. The timing here lines up easily enough as Shin Godzilla was released in 2016. The movie marked the monster's 33rd at Toho Company, and Anno's director propelled the movie to global fame. The modern-day take on Shin Godzilla earned nothing but rave reviews, and the film helped revitalize Godzilla for modern audiences. And of course, its success led to Toho's next outing with Godzilla Minus One that managed to win a historic Academy Award.

After seeing Shin Godzilla, it seems Matsumoto was inspired to put Kaiju No. 8 to paper. The manga made its debut in July 2020, so it took a few years to come around. But of course, the sci-fi drama is not going anywhere any time soon. Kaiju No. 8 has become a next gen success for Shonen Jump, and its recent anime adaptation by Production I.G. has put the series on the map.

Want to know more about Kaiju No. 8? You can read up on its official synopsis below for all the details:

"With the highest kaiju-emergence rates in the world, Japan is no stranger to attack by deadly monsters. Enter the Japan Defense Force, a military organization tasked with the neutralization of kaiju. Kafka Hibino, a kaiju-corpse cleanup man, has always dreamed of joining the force. But when he gets another shot at achieving his childhood dream, he undergoes an unexpected transformation. How can he fight kaiju now that he's become one himself?!"

Do you think Kaiju No. 8 needs a Godzilla crossover now...? Let us know what you think over on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

The Watchers Cast and Director Talk Filming in Ireland and Irish Folklore https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-watchers-cast-and-director-talk-filming-in-ireland-and-irish-folklore/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 20:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak f8dc913a-9ef5-445c-9917-060f39be4913

The Watchers is being released in theatres later this week, and the new horror film is based on the novel of the same name by Irish author, A.M. Shine. In addition to taking place in Ireland, the film is also rooted in Irish folklore. In honor of the project, ComicBook recently had the chance to chat with the film's director, Ishana Night Shyamalan, in addition to stars Dakota Fanning (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Georgina Campbell (Barbarian). During the interviews, they spoke about working in Ireland and what they learned about folklore.

"I have worked in Ireland before and loved it, I worked in Dublin," Fanning shared. "So going back was something I was very excited about and I loved that this story was incorporating that folklore and that fairytale kind of mythical vibe. And I think it was something that I felt like I hadn't seen in a movie in the genre before, of getting to kind of blend the realistic parts and the groundedness with that kind of fairytale magic. And the nature in Ireland is so - it lends itself to the story so much - and really is a character. So yeah, it was really fun to feel like you were in an Irish folk tale."

"I feel like I kind of got to know a little bit," Campbell shared. "Olwen Fouere was really good. She kind of knew a lot about the folklore and had lots of stories to tell. I can't really remember any of it now. But yeah, I learned a little."

"I mean, it's just such a wonderful place," Shyamalan added. "I was so kind of enamored with just both the culture and the storytelling of the Irish culture, so it was totally cool for me to sort of dive into that mythology and I read a bunch of stuff and it's just really, really rich and kind of a wonderful story that they sort of have. So it's just really cool to kind of go into that particular folklore."

What Is The Watchers About?

The Watchers follows an artist (Fanning) named Mina "who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland." Mina eventually finds shelter, but she "unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night."

Joining writer/director Shyamalan behind the camera are director of photography Eli Arenson (Lamb, Hospitality), production designer Ferdia Murphy (Lola, Finding You), editor Job ter Burg (Benedetta, Elle), and costume design by Frank Gallacher (Sebastian, Aftersun). The music is by Abel Korzeniowski (Till, The Nun). The film is produced by M. Night Shyamalan, Ashwin Rajan, and Nimitt Mankad. The executive producers are Jo Homewood and Stephen Dembitzer.

"Well, it was very much just imagining what the four or five of these people were like, and what they would be like together. Then, as the continual lesson that I learned during the filmmaking process, there's just a certain alchemy that happens," the filmmaker revealed during a Q&A in which ComicBook.com was in attendance. "If you're lucky enough to catch it, you do. With this path, there were all these movements that just led to this group being together. They have such an electric energy when they're all together. It's really, really cool. It's so fun. It felt like theater!"

The Watchers lands in theaters on June 7th.

Look Back Director Unpacks the Movie's Horrific Crunch https://comicbook.com/anime/news/look-back-anime-movie-crunch-work-conditions/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 19:31:00 +0000 Megan Peters 33f818c7-7942-4821-981a-cc3812170a41

These days, anime is bigger than ever but working in the field can be rather difficult. As the industry expands, some workers strike rich while others find themselves bending over backwards to meet deadlines. It seems the latter situation befell director Kiyotaka Oshiyama with Look Back, unfortunately. Not long ago, the anime film was previewed in Japan, and it was there the director admitted they all but moved into their office for three months to finish the project.

The confession comes from Oricon as the publication was present at the Look Back preview. It was there Oshiyama admitted most of the staff hasn't even seen the film just yet. The version of the film shown at the preview isn't 100% finished, but even so, the director lived in their office for 2.5 months to get the draft done.

"The staff hasn't even seen the movie yet. The schedule was so grueling as if I've been doing a hard triathlon for a long time. Every day was so thrilling. It's little early to say [Look Back is] finished yet," Oshiyama shared.

"I had drawn until yesterday noon and finished [the movie] last night. I have been staying at the office the past 2.5 months. Finally, I got to go home yesterday and slept on the futon there. I think I have a lot of sleep debt now."

Clearly, Oshiyama and the team at Studio Durian worked hard to bring Look Back to life. While presenting the movie to fans, the director admitted his staff worked on Look Back up until its big premiere, and there is more work to be done. After all, the film's wide release will hit Japan on June 28. Given what we know now, the Studio Durian team is going to be working around the clock to finalize the film's preview, so we hope Oshiyama is able to take care of themselves admit that chaos.

What do you make of the director's latest comment...? Are you ready to check out Look Back? Let us know what you think over on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 3 Begins Production https://comicbook.com/movies/news/horizon-american-saga-chapter-3-production-start-filming-kevin-costner/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 19:22:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 3517de31-424a-4213-b9ff-8a47a18c284b

Kevin Costner is all in on his American Saga. The Oscar-winning actor and director has returned to the world of Westerns with his new Horizon series of films. Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 is hitting theaters at the end of June, with Chapter 2 already completed and following closely behind in August. This story is a four-parter, though, so there will still be two more to go once the summer is through.

Despite the first two chapters not even hitting theaters yet, the third Horizon film is already in production. Costner recently revealed that he and the crew finally had cameras rolling on Chapter 3. You can take a look at his announcement below!

"Back on the ground working on [Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 3]," Costner wrote. "Hard to believe that Part 1 will be in theaters in less than a month now. I hope you'll go and see what we've put together for you."

The first two Horizon films haven't hit theaters just yet, so there's no telling exactly how profitable the Western franchise could ultimately be for Warner Bros. Costner is a genuine screen icon and he's coming off one of the biggest TV shows in years with Yellowstone, so there's certainly hope that a substantial audience will show up to theaters for Horizon this summer.

Still, Costner has faith in the overall lifespan of a film over the opening weekend obsession that befalls many executives. Speaking with Deadline ahead of Horizon's premiere at Cannes last month, Costner talked about how a film's longevity on various formats ultimately determines its success.

"Well, the reality of that is the film lives and whatever are the viewing habits, I own it for the rest of its life," Costner explained. "Would you want to own these two pieces for the rest of your life? Hell yeah. And every five years, license them around the world. Relicense them here in America. The difference is I own that, because of the risk I've taken. Why is Vegas there? It's for all the people that lose to the house. Why are studios there? It's because those movies continue to make money, well beyond their opening weekends."

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 hits theaters on June 28th. Chapter 2 will follow close behind, making its big screen debut on August 16th.

Saturday Night Live: Ryan Gosling's Episode Ranked Most-Watched of Season 49 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/saturday-night-live-ryan-goslings-episode-ranked-most-watched-of-season-49/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 18:05:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 24ce973e-844d-48fa-9050-d76243723b72

The 49th season of Saturday Night Live came to an end last week, and there were some exciting hosts along the way. Some of the season's big guests included Timoth?e Chalamet, Jason Momoa, Emma Stone, Ayo Edebiri, Adam Driver, Jake Gyllenhaal, and more. However, there was one star who came out on top this year, and that's Ryan Gosling. After coming off of awards season for Barbie, the actor was promoting his newest film, The Fall Guy. According to Nielsen, Gosling's episode was the most-watched of the season.

Gosling's episode, which also featured musical guest, Chris Stapleton, saw saw in 8.9 million viewers tuning in on NBC. The episode also earned the season's most social video views with 107.3 million views across platforms. It's no surprise Gosling came out on top considering how many sketches were a hit.

Gosling did many memorable sketches ranging from "Papyrus 2" to a reprisal of the infamous UFO sketch with Kate McKinnon. Gosling's episode also featured a cameo from his The Fall Guy co-star, Emily Blunt. However, one of the biggest standouts of the episode was extremely unexpected. The episode kicked off what seemed to be a sketch focusing on the debate around artificial intelligence, but it ended up featuring Gosling in the crowd dressed as Beavis and Mikey Day as Butt-Head. The duo even reprised the roles on The Fall Guy red carpet.

After the episode was released, cast member Heidi Gardner opened up about laughing during the Beavis and Butt-Head sketch. While breaking has always happened throughout SNL's history, Gardner admitted she was worried it would get her fired.

"I just had it in my head [that] I couldn't do it," she explained on Today with Hoda and Jenna (via EW). "I think you get this big job on SNL and you want to do your job at the best of your ability - I think maybe I thought I'd get fired." Gardner went on to reveal that she typically has ways to stop herself from breaking, including "biting her lip" or yawning. However, she just couldn't keep it together around Gosling or Day. It didn't help that Day was staring directly at her.

"A friend of mine [was] like - you know when you spike the camera? - it's like, 'Mikey spiked you, Heidi,'" she recalled. "He spiked me! It's like his eyes just go... He didn't look fully human to me. He looks like a kangaroo."

"I was trying to imagine seeing him in my head so I was prepared for it, but I just couldn't prepare for what I saw. I really tried," she added in an interview with Vulture. "I even saw Mikey out of the corner of my eye seconds before I went live. I saw the red shorts. I knew I couldn't look over there again. Mikey even told me later that he was bending down and hiding himself so I wouldn't see him."

Congrats to Ryan Gosling on his successful SNL episode!

New Line Developing Horror-Inspired Sequel to Rom-Com Isn't It Romantic https://comicbook.com/movies/news/isnt-it-romantic-sequel-horror-inspired-new-line-rom-com/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 18:01:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 1ab0e34e-e2dc-437c-9ea4-6cc9c255c545

New Line Cinema is following up its 2019 hit Isn't It Romantic with a horror-themed follow up titled Isn't It Scary. The movie, like Rebel Wilson's Isn't It Romantic, will reportedly be a meta-commentary on horror tropes -- something that will give it a bit more competition than Romantic had, given that meta-horror is already a pretty crowded field ever since Wes Craven's New Nightmare and the first Scream popularized it. According to Deadline, who first reported the movie, April Prosser (Look Both Ways) will write the script for Isn't It Scary. Prosser's Look Both Ways, a popular Netflix romantic comedy starring Riverdale's Lili Reinhart, makes her a pretty obvious choice for this project.

Producers will include Todd Garner for Broken Road Productions and Little Engine Entertaniment's Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo. Nobody else is attached yet, and per the Deadline story, even the known participants don't yet have a finalized contract in place.

Isn't It Romantic, which also starred Liam Hemsworth, Adam DeVine, Priyanka Chopra, and Brandon Scott Jones, earned $49 million at the worldwide box office against a reported $30 million budget. In the film, per its official synopsis, "Natalie is a New York architect who works hard to get noticed at her job, but is more likely to deliver coffee and bagels than design the city's next skyscraper. Things go from bad to weird when she gets knocked unconscious during a subway mugging and magically wakes up to find herself in an alternate universe. Always cynical about love, Natalie's worst nightmare soon comes true when she suddenly discovers that she's playing the leading lady in a real-life romantic comedy." The movie currently streams on Hulu.

On the success of Look Both Ways, Prosser earned gigs writing The Rewind for Netflix and The Art of French Kissing and Plus One for Amazon. Her long career has seen her work for about half the studios in Hollywood, and also at Warner Bros. Animation.

Garner, Mathews and Sharbo are currently working on What Kids Want, a follow-up to the many-years-apart What Women Want and What Men Want, for Paramount.

There's no target date for the movie yet.

Original Stars Share Support for 9 to 5 Remake https://comicbook.com/movies/news/original-stars-share-support-for-9-to-5-remake/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 16:57:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 942a7eef-e728-4950-b790-739612c20fa5

Earlier this year, it was announced that a "reimagining" of 9 to 5 is currently in the works at 20th Century Studios and Echo Films. This new version of the film is reportedly being written by Juno and Lisa Frankenstein scribe Diablo Cody with Friends alum Jennifer Aniston also signed on as a producer. The original 1980 film starred Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, and Lily Tomlin as three employees of a "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" played by Dabney Coleman, who passed away last month. Through a fun series of events, the three women find a way to turn the tables on him. Fonda and Tomlin were recently in attendance at the ERA Coalition's premiere screening of the award-winning documentary film Still Working 9 to 5. The duo spoke with ET, and shared support for the remake.

"Good luck to them," Fonda said. "It's fun. I wish them a lot of luck. They're very talented."

"Oh, I'm very excited," Tomlin added. "I'm pleased to know that someone else is working on it and may they have successful fruition."

The original 9 to 5 was the second-highest-grossing film of 1980, earning over $100 million at the box office. The film's titular song, which was performed by Parton, was also a huge success. While Parton was unable to join Tomlin and Fonda at the event, she did make an appearance via a video link.

This 9 to 5 remake won't be the first follow-up to the film, which also inspired a TV sitcom of the same name starring Rita Moreno and Valerie Curtin. In 2009, 9 to 5 also launched a stage musical, which featured new original songs from Parton.

Diablo Cody Explains Barbie Exit:

Barbie was the biggest hit of 2023, but the movie was almost very different. The project was originally going to star comedian Amy Schumer until she exited the project and a new creative team was brought on. That version was also going to be written by Cody. During an interview with GQ, Cody talked about her own exit from the project and explained why The LEGO Movie was a "roadblock" at the time.

"I think I know why I sh*t the bed," Cody explained. "When I was first hired for this, I don't think the culture had not embraced the femme or the bimbo as valid feminist archetypes yet. If you look up 'Barbie' on TikTok you'll find this wonderful subculture that celebrates the feminine, but in 2014, taking this skinny blonde white doll and making her into a heroine was a tall order."

"That idea of an anti-Barbie made a lot of sense given the feminist rhetoric of 10 years ago," Cody said of her Barbie project that never happened. "I didn't really have the freedom then to write something that was faithful to the iconography; they wanted a girl-boss feminist twist on Barbie, and I couldn't figure it out because that's not what Barbie is." She added, "I heard endless references to The Lego Movie in development, and it created a problem for me because they had done it so well. Any time I came up with something meta, it was too much like what they had done. It was a roadblock for me, but now enough time has passed that they can just cast [The Lego Movie villain] Will Ferrell as the antagonist in a real-life Barbie movie and nobody cares."

Stay tuned for more updates about 9 to 5.

Sherlock Holmes 3 "Very Much Alive" According to Producer https://comicbook.com/movies/news/sherlock-holmes-3-very-much-alive-according-to-producer/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 15:55:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 29b031af-3851-44b0-9c7b-78b92e485342

Robert Downey Jr. last played Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011, and fans have been eager to see the actor return to the role alongside Jude Law's John Watson. This week, it was announced that Young Sherlock would be getting a series from Prime Video with Guy Ritchie directing and executive producing. Ritchie helmed both of Downey Jr.'s Sherlock films, and the director previously said a third movie would completely depend on Downey Jr., who won his first Oscar earlier this year. Downey Jr. may not be in Young Sherlock, but that doesn't mean the long-awaited third movie is dead. In fact, producer Susan Downey recently spoke with ScreenRant and addressed the project.

"I mean, look, no, there's no update, other than it's still very much alive in our hearts," Downey explained. "Every day we talk about, 'What is the best next version of that?' Because anytime I see Robert and Jude together, which fortunately, I do get to see a few times a year, we hang out, and I'm just like, 'Can I get these guys back on screen together?', it's magic. There needs to be a really strong reason, it needs to be a great story, and we do have some things in the works."

Who Is Playing Young Sherlock?

The new Prime Video series is based on Andy Lane's "Young Sherlock Holmes" novels, and it will star Hero Fiennes Tiffin as the iconic detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Matthew Parkhill will serve as the show's writer and showrunner.

"In Young Sherlock, we're going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they've never imagined before," Ritchie said during the announcement. "We're going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love."

"This exciting, new chapter about one of the world's best-known literary characters, will delight our global customers with its captivating storytelling" added Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios. "With the brilliant creative team, led by Guy Ritchie and Matthew Parkhill, we will explore untold mysteries of how young Sherlock found his way to a life of truth-seeking."

Here's what Prime Video has to say about the series so far: "With all the wit and charm of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes features, Young Sherlock will be an irreverent, action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's beloved detective in an explosive re-imagining of this iconic character."

"At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever."

Inhumans Star Anson Mount Debunks Rumors of MCU Return https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/inhumans-anson-mount-debunks-rumors-avengers-secret-wars-mcu-return/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 14:57:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 930ed41c-92fb-4b45-940e-4045a7804671

There's a lot to look forward to in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with many new films on the horizon, but one project people keep talking about is Avengers: Secret Wars. Currently, the movie is scheduled to come out in 2027, and there are already lots of theories about who could show up from past Marvel projects. There was a rumor going around online that Inhumans star Anson Mount (Black Bolt) could be popping up in the film. The show was canceled after only eight episodes, but Mount made a surprise return as the character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This week, a Marvel fan account tweeted that the Inhumans cast would be in Secret Wars, and the actor shut down the rumor pretty fast.

"The Inhumans from the Inhumans series will return in AVENGERS: SECRET WARS," the tweet claimed. "This is so interesting. Please tell us more about this contract I apparently signed in my sleep. I'm so curious to hear all the juicy details from a feed that is clearly not a click-farm," Mount replied. You can check out the post below:

Anson Mount Addresses MCU Return:

While Mount isn't expected to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, anything is possible considering the film is three years away. In fact, Captain America: Brave New World is currently in the middle of reshoots with a new cast member, so you never know who could get added to the MCU at the last minute. Back in 2022, Mount did talk about his return to Marvel in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

"Finally able to discuss this [without] providing too many spoilers," Mount said in a tweet at the time. "Getting the call from [Kevin Feige] was one of the most unexpected of my life. It was an honor & joy to finally work [with] Sam Raimi who reached out to engage me on how best to do this. Beyond grateful for the experience."

What's Marvel Studios' Next Movie?

It's going to be a while before Avengers: Secret Wars hits the big screen, but Deadpool & Wolverine is right around the corner.

In Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) will change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). The film also stars Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox, and Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, with the return of Deadpool alums Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Rob Delaney as Peter, and Lewis Tan as Shatterstar. Aaron Stanford is returning as Pyro from the X-Men film series, with Jennifer Garner rumored to return as Elektra Natchios.

Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce with Louis D'Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey and Simon Kinberg serving as executive producers. Deadpool & Wolverine is written by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy. Deadpool & Wolverine will be released exclusively in theaters on July 26th.

Scream 7: Neve Campbell Says She's "Grateful" For Franchise Return https://comicbook.com/movies/news/scream-7-neve-campbell-says-shes-grateful-for-franchise-return/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 02:14:00 +0000 Haley Miller 0972dd1a-ca3d-4c19-bfbb-278cf7653d58

Neve Campbell, one of the greatest final girls in all of horror, is opening up about returning to the Scream franchise after a disagreement about pay would keep her away from Scream 6.

While attending Reefer Madness: The Musical in Los Angeles on May 30, Campbell revealed to People that she's grateful to be coming back in a "respectful" way. "Those movies have been such a big part of my life and it means so much to me, and I was sad to miss the last one, to not be a part of it."

"I was really grateful that they came back to me in a respectful way," she continued. "I think that means a lot to women and to society. I'm grateful to be able to step in into Sidney's shoes again and tell her story."

Back in March, it was officially announced that Campbell is returning to the iconic horror franchise for the first time since 2022. Not only that, Scream's original creator, Kevin Williamson, is returning to direct. "I'm so excited to announce this news!!! Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!!" Campbell wrote on Instagram. "It's always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the Scream movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I'm very happy and proud to say I've been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn't be more thrilled!!!"

Campbell's appearance in 2022's Scream served as a reboot so by the next film it focused on sisters the Carpenter sisters, played by Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera. The two are the daughters of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) but while Tara (Ortega) tries to put the past behind her to move on the best she can, her sister Sam (Barrera) is struggling to come to terms with who she is.

Throughout the film, Sam is haunted by visions of her father and fears that she may give into her dark side and become the next serial killer that terrorizes the town. The core four are haunted by the new Ghostface but they have backup with a returning Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox). While Scream 7 should continue the story of the Carpenter sisters, the controversial firing of Barrera and Ortega walking out due to scheduling conflicts will force the franchise to return to its legacy characters once more.

Stay tuned to Comicbook for updates on Scream 7.

The Watchers Director Ishana Night Shyamalan Shares What She Learned From Servant, Addresses Future in Horror https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-watchers-director-ishana-night-shyamalan-shares-what-she-learned-from-servant-addresses-future-in-horror/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 01:53:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 7bc080c2-551e-4a5a-bcb1-b7cb82d335b9

The Watchers is being released in theatres next week, and the new horror film was helmed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the daughter of M. Night Shyamalan. The new movie was based on the novel by A.M. Shine and marks the younger Shyamalan's first feature. Previously, she directed multiple episodes of Apple TV+'s Servant, so ComicBook asked Shyamalan what she learned from working on the horror series, and if it is a genre she plans to continue working in.

"Oh my God. So many lessons," Shyamalan said of working on Servant. "Yeah, I think those experiences I really used as sort of a training ground. I felt really unequipped to embark on this artistic process that I loved so much. And so it was very much kind of looking, observing as much as I could and watching as much as I could and trying out different skills and techniques, and then really got to put those all I think into this feature process."

"[It] wasn't really an intentional choice that I go into horror. It's just sort of the material that I think I'm interested in," she explained. "I feel for whatever reason, I just connect to darker, scarier things I think I have since I've been young. So yeah, it's more so the palette that I enjoy playing in, but I really enjoy this kind of expanding the genre and touching other things. So for example, this sort of fantasy horror intersection I think is really compelling and cool to me, and would love to go even deeper into that."

Dakota Fanning Talks Working With Ishana Night Shyamalan:

During ComicBook's interview with The Wachers star, Dakota Fanning, she shared what it was like to work with a first-time feature director.

"Yeah, she's super, super excited. Always had a smile on her face, such a bright person and somebody that was clearly put on this earth to create," Fanning said of Shyamalan. "She's super creative, super collaborative, comes from a family of artists who love to make cool things, and so that's inspiring to be around."

"She wrote this and was directing it and had such a clear vision of what she wanted to do and you can't help but feel inspired to collaborate with someone like that," Fanning added.

In addition to Fanning, The Watchers stars Georgina Campbell (Barbarian, Suspicion), Oliver Finnegan (Creeped Out, Outlander), and Olwen Fouere (The Northman, The Tourist).

The Watchers lands in theaters on June 7th. Stay tuned for more from our interviews about the upcoming horror film.

Digital Lizards of Doom Vol. 1's Top Five Easter Eggs Include Alien, Dune, Zelda, and More https://comicbook.com/comics/news/digital-lizards-of-doom-vol-1s-top-five-easter-eggs-include-alien-dune-zelda-and-more/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 22:45:00 +0000 Matthew Aguilar f04f1da2-a947-4dbb-b09d-5b67ab950dad

The delightful world of Digital Lizards of Doom is back with a new volume of adventures from Mad Cave Studios and Papercutz, but that doesn't mean there's not plenty of fun still to be had in Volume 1. More fun is right around the corner with Digital Lizards of Doom Vol. 2, which hits stores on June 25th, but Vol. 1 is in stores right now, and those who dive in will find a bevy of pop culture and comic Easter Eggs throughout. The talented team of Gabriel Valentin, Ernie Najera, Margo Prodan and Dan Brozo have woven in all sorts of hidden geekery throughout Vol. 1, including nods to Wizard of Oz, Alien, Dune, The Legend of Zelda, and more, and you can check out our five favorite Easter Eggs from Digital Lizards of Doom Vol. 1 below.

1. Wizard of Oz

1-wizard-of-oz.jpg
(Photo: Mad Cave Studios)

It doesn't get much more iconic than Wizard of Oz, and the 1939 film is the perfect place to start our Easter Egg journey. The book follows a similar pattern to Dorothy's adventure in the film, which starts out in black and white and then shifts into full color when she finds herself in Oz. Similarly, the Digital Lizards of Doom moves from black and white artwork to the world of full color when things shift to another dimension, and taking that well past coincidence is the dialogue. Dorothy then says "Toto...I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore", and in DLoD the next line is "I have a feeling you're not on earth anymore."

2. Alien and Dune

2-alien-and-dune.jpg
(Photo: Mad Cave Studios)

For our next set of Easter Eggs, it's all about Pineapple Pete's slick gaming room, where he tells us to choose a character as he sets up the first level of our video game adventure. If you glance above him, you will find homages to two beloved properties. The poster on the left is a tribute to Ridley Scott's Alien film, while the poster on the right is a tribute to Frank Herbert's Dune novels. There's actually more connections than just the posters themselves though, as Dizzy Doom's arc and story is heading in a similar direction to Dune and Alien's lead heroes.

3. Samurai Jack

3-samurai-jack.png
(Photo: Mad Cave Studios)

Pineapple Pete has more tricks up his sleeve, including one that homages the beloved and legendary Samurai Jack. As Pete explains the origins of the DLoD universe, he says "Long ago in a distant land...I, Pineapple Pete, pineapple demon of Darkness." Fans of Samurai Jack will notice that his statement is very similar to how the villainous Aku introduces himself in every episode, where he says "Long ago in a distant land...I, Aku the shapeshifting master of darkness..." This also showcases the relationship between the main villain and the main hero, so it's quite a bit more than just a fun nod to the source material.

4. The Legend of Zelda

4-legend-of-zelda.png
(Photo: Mad Cave Studios)

One of the true timeless franchises in gaming is The Legend of Zelda, and there is a fun Zelda-styled moment in Digital Lizards of Doom Vol. 1, though you might have missed it. In one scene, Dana Deathly is saying they will need the help of Fat Cat Roger to make this victory happen, and as he tries to come to terms with this predicament, Deathly says "It's dangerous to go alone". That phrase will be familiar to fans of the Zelda franchise, and it first showed up in Legend of Zelda on NES in 1986. It's since become a well-known phrase in the series, and it also represents Zelda's move from the safety of his immediate location and village to the lively but dangerous world that lies beyond his home, and that moment and shift can be found in Dizzy Doom's story as well.

William Shakespeare

5-shakespeare.jpg
(Photo: Mad Cave Studios)

For our final Easter Egg, we move to the realm of real-life history, with a host of nods to the literary icon William Shakespeare. In the book, fans are introduced to the cyborg cat pirate Captain Fat Rogers, but they are also introduced to Fat Rogers' first mate Shakey Spears. Spears is connected to Shakespeare in several ways, including the fact that he is a Dryad, a favorite of Shakespeare's. Shakey's clothes are also an ode to Shakespeare, but the most apparent homage is Shakey's exclusive use of poetic verse in his dialogue. You can check out the image above, you can find the official description for Digital Lizards of Doom below.

"When a magical trickster secretly traps an entire universe inside a video game world, a young warrior named Dizzy Doom must search for answers to unravel the mystery. But as villains from another galaxy come to attack his kingdom, Dizzy is forced to make an unlikely alliance with a mysterious ninja and cyborg cat pirate. Dizzy's ideology will be tested, as he comes to realize everything is not always as it seems."

Digital Lizards of Doom Vol. 1: Dizzy Doom is in stores now. Digital Lizards of Doom Vol. 2: Commander E.K.O. is in stores on June 25th.

Fantastic Four: Paul Walter Hauser Reveals He Was Hesitant to Join Marvel Movie https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/fantastic-four-paul-walter-hauser-reveals-he-was-hesitant-to-join-marvel-movie/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 22:02:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 0b3726f6-92ed-4ea2-9730-e727e9c042f5

A lot of casting news for Marvel's The Fantastic Four came out in May, including the announcement that Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird, Cruella) had joined the cast in an unknown role. The Emmy-winning actor recently teased that he's playing "a very distinct character" that he is "excited to play." In a new conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor revealed why he was initially hesitant to take the role.

"Don't think that didn't weigh in as I was deciding whether or not to take the job," Hauser explained. "That movie has not fully been nailed just yet ... But I really do think the combination of the screenplay, and the department heads that are working on the film, and that classy cast of really exciting actors - some of them known for a long time, and some of them having a moment right now - [make me feel that] this movie is special, and it was something I wanted to be a part of."

Who Is Paul Walter Hauser Playing in The Fantastic Four?

Currently, it is unclear who Hauser is playing in the Marvel film, but there is a lot of speculation ranging from Mole Man to H.E.R.B.I.E.

"I know what that question is leading to, which is the answer as to which character I'm to play. So all I can say is that I, in some iteration, am in the movie The Fantastic Four until I get fired or recast," Hauser recently said to ScreenRant. "So I can't say anything about the character I'm playing, but know that it is in the sort of lexicon and mythology of The Fantastic Four stories. And it's a very distinct character that I'm excited to play and I'm kind of mapping out what I'm doing with that right now."

Who Stars in The Fantastic Four?

In addition to Hauser, The Fantastic Four is set to star Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing. The movie will also feature Ralph Ineson as Galactus, Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer, and John Malkovich in an unknown role.

Matt Shakman is directing Fantastic Four, which is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on July 25, 2025. Shakman has previously said that the reboot will be much from previous attempts to bring Marvel's first family to life on the big screen,

"It's different in so many ways. I wish I could be specific," Shakman said. "I wish I could say more. But we are doing things very differently from a story standpoint, from an approach to the filmmaking standpoint, that really fits the material. I wish I could say more. I would love to, but I can't. But I think it's going to be unlike anything you've seen before, and certainly unlike anything at Marvel that you've seen before."

Brad Pitt's F1 Movie Gets a Major Update From Producer https://comicbook.com/movies/news/brad-pitts-f1-movie-gets-a-major-update-from-producer/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 20:50:00 +0000 Haley Miller f6417e9f-e944-4d4f-be6f-d4dbe4340f55

Brad Pitt's big-budget F1 film from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has been in production for quite some time. During last year's British Formula One Grand Prix at the legendary Silverstone, the crew was on-site with their allotted pit garage that featured their own replica equipment. Production was later halted due to the Hollywood strikes that impacted the industry at large where rumors began circulating that the footage from the films would have to be scrapped entirely due to it creating a headache for editors. F1 themselves denied the claims in a statement. "The movie will continue shooting at grands prix in 2024, with Brad and Damson driving actual cars on track for racing sequences."

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently told Deadline at the Bad Boys: Ride or Die premiere that production in London is ongoing. "Yeah, we're filming that in London as we speak. So I fly back after this."

Though plot details have remained relatively slim, it's rumored to be titled Apex and feature the fictional APXGP team. Pitt divulged a little bit of details to Sky Sports last summer. "So [Sonny Hayes] has a horrible crash, kind of craps out and disappears and is racing in other disciplines. His friend, played by Javier Bardem, is a team owner. They're a last-placed owner, 21, 22 on the grid. They've never scored a point. They have a young phenom played by Damson Idris. He brings me in as a kind of Hail Mary, and hijinks ensue."

During a recent episode of Hot Ones, Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula One World Drivers' title holder which he shares with Michael Schumacher, revealed that the untitled movie is going to "blow people away" due to the fact that in racing films, it's incredibly hard to capture the speed of the car.

"Racing movies, I feel like it's very hard to capture them," Hamilton said. "You're following a truck that has a camera on the back, so it's hard to capture the speed. You can't have a truck filming us at 200 mph, so it's all kind of faked at a slower speed and they speed it up. But this is all real time, real speed. I think if you go back to Steve McQueen for example, back then they would have men laying on front of the car with the camera, or have a big camera on top of the helmet. Now we've got all this amazing new technology. So I feel like Joe [Kosinski's] honestly, I think he's going to blow people away."

The Watchers Stars Explain How They Adapted Characters From A.M. Shine's Novel https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-watchers-dakota-fanning-explain-how-adapted-characters-from-am-shine-novel/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 20:04:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 0e9c15df-4edb-4773-9ebc-f82c9db6b7a3

The Watchers is being released exclusively in theaters next week, and the new horror film was adapted from the novel by A. M. Shine. ComicBook recently had the chance to chat with the film's director, Ishana Night Shyamalan, in addition to stars Dakota Fanning (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Georgina Campbell (Barbarian). During the interviews, Fanning and Campbell revealed how they approached bringing book characters to life.

"I usually go more with the script just because ultimately that's what you are bringing to life," Fanning explained. "I think it's so lucky that this story has such a great book behind it to be inspired by and the source material is so excellent. I met the writer A.M. Shine of the book and he was awesome. And so he created such a great world to make this movie off of. But I usually focus more on the script. I feel like if you're doing something that's in the book, but maybe it's not necessarily relevant to the story ... just can be kind of complicated to mix them. So I usually focus on the script."

"Yeah, I read the book before I took my meeting, so I just wanted to kind of get more of an understanding, and it's great to be able to look at more of a reference of the character, but Ciara, you don't find out that much about her," Campbell explained. "You're only from her perspective for one chapter of the book, which gave me a lot of freedom to be able to also build upon her, which was really nice because actually when A.M. Shine came to the set, he was like, 'Oh my God, you've made Ciara really interesting. She's kind of annoying in the book.'"

"I think that compassion and that kind of sweetness and she really just wants to take care of people and sometimes to her detriment, but I think that's kind of a lovely, she's kind, she's a kind person, which is good," Campbell added of her character.

The film also stars Oliver Finnegan (Creeped Out, Outlander) and Olwen Fouere (The Northman, The Tourist).

Captain America: Brave New World Set Photo Offers First Look at Giancarlo Esposito's Mystery Character https://comicbook.com/movies/news/captain-america-4-giancarlo-esposito-first-look-set-photo-character-mystery-mcu/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 16:31:00 +0000 ComicBook.com Staff b091a764-c54a-4635-b746-373e7d6894b7

Captain America: Brave New World's latest set photos show off a new look at Giancarlo Esposito as an unnamed villain. In the latest picture from the reshoots, Esposito is walking towards the location dressed in a brown-lined coat and shades. (You can see that image from Christopher Oquendo here!) Up top, the villain is rocking at least three knives and three guns. His pants would seem to be military-influenced with combat boots. Clearly, Captain America: Brave New World is shooting for a grounded, realistic tone. (Well, as much as it can be with a Red Hulk probably coming in to ruin Sam Wilson's day.) Not a lot is known about Esposito's MCU villain. However, with 20 days of reshoots in progress, it's safe to say The Boys star has a pretty big role in the 2025 blockbuster.

For weeks now, Esposito has teased his introduction to the Marvel Universe. Yesterday, multiple trades confirmed that The Mandalorian star would be joining the fray in Captain America: Brave New World. There have been no character details announced by Marvel just yet. A lot of the prominent fancasts are completely off the board now. (Remember when the Internet thought that Esposito would be playing a main X-Men character like Magneto or Professor X?) With the villain in-tow, Marvel Studios' focus shifts toward getting Captain America's next big-screen adventure to the heights of previous entries.

What Does This Mean For Captain America?

(Photo: Marvel Studios)

Well, for starters, it means that Sam Wilson is up for one heck of a fight. ComicBook's Phase Zero podcast spoke to Marvel producer Nate Moore about Captain America: Brave New World. During our chat, the Marvel braintrust member teased some real hurdles for Anthony Mackie's Avenger to clear. You can add Esposito to the fray as just one more obstacle for Cap to fly over in the new movie.

"I think, he's not Steve Rogers and I think that's a good thing," Moore told our hosts. "Because to me, this new Cap is Rocky. He's going to be the underdog in any situation. He's not a super soldier. He's not a hundred years old. He doesn't have the Avengers. What happens with this guy who announces publicly kind of, without the support, 'I'm new Captain America.' What happens next? I think is fascinating because he's a guy. He's a guy with wings and a shield, but he is a guy.

"So, we're going to put him through the wringer and make him earn it, and see what happens when he is outweighed, outclassed, out-everything," the producer added. "What makes somebody Captain America? I'm going to argue it's not being a super soldier. And I think we're going to prove that with Mackie and Sam Wilson."

The Garfield Movie Gobbles #1 Box Office Spot Over Furiosa https://comicbook.com/movies/news/garfield-movie-number-1-box-office-furiosa-rankings/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 16:04:00 +0000 Aaron Perine fb0600b9-48ce-48bf-a1e1-bbadb72ee25e

The Garfield Movie is coming back to the table to take the #1 spot at the box office this weekend. With no new massive releases this week, theaters are looking at a two film race between Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie. Sony's little family movie starring Chris Pratt is poised to claw its way to the top of the ladder over another solid George Miller outing in the Mad Max universe. A lot has been made of Furiosa's box office performance. But, a quick scan of everything else in the marketplace shows that the film is far from alone when it comes to theatrical offerings. After all, we're just a few weeks removed from everyone being worried about The Fall Guy.

There will be a lot of time to talk about what was going on with Furiosa at another time. But, for now, we dig into The Garfield Movie. Another $3.7 million on the stack will likely make the higher-ups at the studio smile. If Garfield can notch the projected $13 million in a second weekend at the buffet line, they have to feel pretty good about the movie overall. Keep in mind that the famous orange cat has already amassed $40 million at the North American box office. We might really see Garfield earn back its production budget in America alone by the time it bows out of theaters. So, the slow-ish summer rolls on at the movies, but that's what the season is about over the last few years.

How Good Is The Garfield Movie?

the-garfield-movie-reviews-reactions.png

So, with our favorite orange cat leading the box office, the question remains: Is The Garfield Movie any good? ComicBook's Charlie Ridgely reviewed the feature. And, for him, it's largely forgettable. Yes, there's the resident slapstick that animated kids movies demand. But, it left our critic wanting a little bit more. The realm of children's/family animation has leveled up In big ways over the last few years with things like Spider-Verse, The Bad Guys, Puss In Boots, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, or any Pixar release in recent memory. But, for a fun time with the little ones, The Garfield Movie will suffice.

"One could argue that The Garfield Movie is "for kids" so all that matters is little ones laugh and have a good time, but kids deserve better than that. This point is also moot because The Garfield Movie is largely void of the fun and humor kids crave," Ridgely argues. "There are some zany bits designed to elicit laughs, clearly inspired by Wil E. Coyote and the other Looney Tunes. They're okay, at times, and will get a few chuckles, but they're out of place amidst a movie that isn't aiming for the slapstick nature of that material. The Garfield Movie never knows what it wants to be and makes those scenes that could be entertaining feel more frustrating."

Deadpool Invades What If...? - An Immersive Story https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-wolverine-mcu-tva-loki-what-if-an-immersive-story-easter-egg/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 14:49:00 +0000 Aaron Perine d5083b6e-3280-4ef9-886d-8632df4f352a

Deadpool & Wolverine's Ryan Reynolds makes a surprise appearance in What If...? - An Immersive Story over on Apple Vision Pro. While a lot has been made of The Infinity Saga characters that pop-up in the wild new AR Marvel experience, seeing Deadpool and the TVA appear as well is really hysterical. Miss Minutes appears in front of the user to introduce the Time Variance Authority. While she's on that retro console, a screen appears from the top corner of the Apple Vision Pro's display. From there, Deadpool steals the show with a bunch of that series' trademark humor.

Hearing Ryan Reynolds basically encourage users to stare at his butt is about par for the course for the Deadpool series. Miss Minutes also seems to be really disturbed by The Merc With A Mouth's appearance and his hijacking of the TVA's transmission. (Credit to Deadpool Updates for snagging the moment!) Now, fans are going to be craving an interaction between the sentient AI and Deadpool when the movie hits this summer. It's clear that Marvel Studios is zeroing in on the strongest fan reactions to their movies and shows with recent releases. X-Men content and What If...? have performed very well over the last 12 months. Look for these elements to keep showing up.

What's Coming This Summer In Deadpool & Woverine?

deadpool-wolverine-synopsis.jpg

The studio is already teasing the wild times ahead in this summer's only MCU blockbuster: "In Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) will change the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Aaron Stanford is returning as Pyro from the X-Men film series, with Jennifer Garner rumored to return as Elektra Natchios."

Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce with Louis D'Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey and Simon Kinberg serving as executive producers. Deadpool & Wolverine is written by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy. Deadpool & Wolverine will be released exclusively in theaters on July 26th.

The Watchers and Barbarian Star Georgina Campbell Wants to Work With Ari Aster https://comicbook.com/horror/news/the-watchers-and-barbarian-star-georgina-campbell-wants-to-work-with-ari-aster/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 01:51:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 524eb65c-7da7-44f9-894b-e8d489bcd44d

The Watchers is heading to theaters next week, and the new horror film stars Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, Oliver Finnegan, and Olwen Fouere. Campbell is no stranger to horror having previously starred in Barbarian, Bird Box: Barcelona, Black Mirror, and more. ComicBook recently had the chance to chat with Campbell in honor of The Watchers, and we mentioned how she's made a name for herself in the horror genre, and wondered if there are any directors she like to work with or any horror subgenres she'd like to tackle.

"I mean, I love Ari Aster," Campbell shared. "I think everyone would give their arm to work with Ari Aster. Sub-genres? I don't really know. I'm not sure, but I would love to work with Ari Aster."

Ari Aster has also made a big name for himself in horror in recent years by helming Hereditary and Midsommar. Last year, the director helmed Beau Is Afraid, and he's expected to reunite with the film's star, Joaquin Phoenix, alongside Pedro Pascal for his next project, Eddington.

You can watch our interview with Campbell at the top of the page.

What Is The Watchers About?

The Watchers follows an artist (Dakota Fanning) named Mina "who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland." Mina eventually finds shelter, but she "unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night."

In A Violent Nature Review

ComicBook Nation host Kofi Outlaw gives In a Violent Nature 3 out of 5 stars, writing that while the main distinguishing feature of the film (being told from the perspective of a Jason Vorhees Slasher-Killer) wears thin at times, some innovative kills (including one instant-classic scene) and a wave of anxiety and fear that's achieved in the final section make writer/director Chris Nash's debut a noteworthy one.

Hugh Jackman Reveals the Hardest Part About Playing Wolverine Again https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/hugh-jackman-reveals-the-hardest-part-about-playing-wolverine-again/ Sat, 01 Jun 2024 01:01:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak cb5f6e2e-dc07-435d-acf7-e7b9cf3a929f

Deadpool & Wolverine is heading to theaters in July, and the movie marks Hugh Jackman's return to the role of Wolverine for the first time since Logan was released in 2017. The actor has talked a lot about playing the iconic mutant again, and has shared some behind-the-scenes looks at his workout process. Jackman recently sat down with his Marvel co-star, Ryan Reynolds, for a conversation through People. During the chat, Reynolds praised Jackman's dedication, and Jackman revealed the hardest part about getting back to his Wolverine body.

"Just the sheer relentlessness that you dedicated yourself towards stunts, choreography," Reynolds said. "It was the first time I'd ever seen how invaluable a background in song and dance is when you are doing an action movie ... You hit your marks in those fight scenes with speed and confidence, the likes of which I have never seen."

"I don't care if you were 25, 35, 45 or 55. It was lightning ... Watching you do what just looked like a clinic on stunt work was one of the most impressive things I've ever seen in my life," he added.

"When I came back to it, it was really fun and I was thrilled," Jackman explained. "My body was a little sore at the beginning, but I was thrilled that my body was still responding. And I realized how good it is for your brain."

"The hardest bit...[was] the food," Jackman added. "I have to eat a lot. For me, for my body type, I'm naturally skinny. To get the size on, that's the hardest bit. That's the bit that does my head in."

"Yeah, the five, six meals a day, which sounds great to some people," Reynolds agreed. "I'm sure they're like, 'Well, that sounds great.' But it's not like the type of food that you would really necessarily enjoy."

What Is Deadpool 3 About?

Will Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery Continue the Franchise's MCU Tradition? https://comicbook.com/movies/news/will-wake-up-dead-man-a-knives-out-mystery-continue-franchises-mcu-tradition-jeremy-renner-murderer/ Fri, 31 May 2024 23:57:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak de9c8255-595e-4452-bc17-6e0da0c3fabc

Rian Johnson's third Benoit Blanc mystery starring Daniel Craig is heading into production soon, and it was revealed this week that the movie will be titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The film's cast was announced this week, and one of the big names on the roster is Jeremy Renner. Many fans are speculating if Renner is playing himself in the film due to the actor being mentioned in the previous installment, Glass Onion. However, others think he's a shoo-in to be the killer, because of his film history...

Renner is best known for playing Clint Barton/Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he's not the first MCU actor to appear in Johnson's whodunnit films. Chris Evans, who played Steve Rogers/Captain America in the MCU, starred in Knives Out. Not only was he a major part of the film, but he was also revealed to be the murderer. In the movie's sequel, Glass Onion, Edward Norton was the murderer. Of course, Norton played Bruce Banner/Hulk in The Incredible Hulk before Mark Ruffalo took over the role in The Avengers.

Many film fans have been sharing this tweet from Eric Goldman, who predicted the Wake Up Dead Man killer would be a Marvel star before Renner was even cast:

It's worth noting that one MCU actor didn't survive the events of Glass Onion. Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista died in the sequel, which means not all Marvel actors are safe. While it's likely a coincidence Evans and Norton were both Marvel alums who played the villains in Knives Out and Glass Onion (after all, there are a LOT of Marvel actors out there), it would be pretty funny if Johnson decides to make Renner the murderer of Wake Up Dead Man.

What Is Wake Up Dead Man About?

The plot of Wake Up Dead Man is currently unknown, but there are already a lot of theories going around online. In addition to Craig and Renner, the new film stars Josh O'Connor, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Jeremy Renner, Mila Kunis, and Daryl McCormack.

"I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is. There's a whole tonal spectrum from Carr to Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies," Rian Johnson recently explained on Twitter. "We're about to go into production on the 3rd one, and I'm very, very excited to share the title, which gives a little hint of where it's going."

"It's coming along. I obviously couldn't work during the strike, and now that it's over, I'm diving in full force, and so it's coming along," Johnson previously said of the project. "I've got the premise, I've got the setting, I've got what the movie is in my head. It's just a matter of writing the damn thing."

WWE's Charlotte Flair Shares First Look at Her Horror Film Debut https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/wwes-charlotte-flair-shares-first-look-at-her-horror-film-debut-you-lose-you-die/ Fri, 31 May 2024 22:54:00 +0000 Haley Miller 00be34e8-2b24-42e2-bd23-69d5c61709fa

WWE's Charlotte Flair (real name Ashley Fliehr) may not be actively wrestling right now, but she's keeping herself book and busy with her latest project, an indie horror You Lose You Die from director Carlos 'Spiff TV' Suarez. She shared the news on her social media earlier this month, writing, "So incredibly excited to be apart of this movie? You'll be in for a treat ???."

Charlotte Flair's Horror Debut

According to Deadline, You Lose You Die follows Mr. Fantastik (Freddy Rodriguez), a sociopathic tech expert who runs a show on the dark web with two other individuals that are just like him. Played by Flair and Anthony Alvarez respectively, Ms. Perfect and Mr. Creep host thousands of viewers who vote on what the prisoners will participate in. If the prisoners lose, the viewers are able to vote on what weapons will be used to kill them.

Flair today shared a first look image of her character on social media which shows her covered in blood. She's posing with her blonde hair slicked back in a bun while wearing a black patent leather bodysuit.

Flair was injured back in December during a match with Asuka on WWE SmackDown. After coming down off the ropes, she injured her ACL, MCL, and Meniscus. The devastating injury has kept her off television since as she has been recovering from the injuries. Although it would take a normal athlete around nine months to come back from something that severe, Flair has been consistently providing updates on her recovery that make it appear that the genetically superior wrestler will be back in the fold sooner than expected.

Flair made her Hollywood acting debut in 2017 with Psych: The Movie as Heather Rockwear. Since then she's only acted in one other project, Peacock's Punky Brewster series playing herself. Flair isn't the only WWE Superstar making a transition over to the big screen. Former Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns is currently in production on a film starring Seth Rogen, Keanu Reeves and Keke Palmer. The current Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will make his return to acting in The Naked Gun reboot.

During a recent episode of Busted Open Radio, Ric Flair provided an update on his daughter and opened up about her filming You Lose You Die. ""It's been great. She's making a movie and all right now with my good friend Smith. She's over in Santa Domingo. It's been on her bucket list to make a movie, and it looks like it's going to be a pretty good deal," Flair said. "But, her recovery is just unbelievable. She attacked it from day one. Regardless of what she's doing, she still works out twice a day."

Stay tuned to Comicbook for updates on You Lose You Die, Flair, and WWE.

Captain America: Brave New World Getting Reshoots to Add Giancarlo Esposito as Villain https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/captain-america-brave-new-world-getting-reshoots-to-add-giancarlo-esposito-as-villain/ Fri, 31 May 2024 21:57:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 6cc80b7d-4504-447a-85d6-95c17b50069e

Captain America: Brave New World has been delayed until 2025, and it was previously announced that the movie would be heading into reshoots. There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the new film, including the possibility of Better Call Saul and The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito joining the project in an unknown role. It was revealed earlier this month that the actor was joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it looks like he will officially be playing a villain in Cap 4. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Esposito is officially joining Captain America: Brave New World.

The reshoots are reportedly expected to last 22 days, and while Esposito's role is not confirmed, THR reports that sources are saying he's playing a "villainous role." They added that there will "be some new action sequences," and Julius Onah is continuing to direct.

"The MCU has knocked on my door and it's a role you won't predict," Esposito claimed during Phoenix Fan Fusion (via Legion of Sand on Twitter.) "It will be teased and there will be a series afterwards."

Captain America: Brave New World's Reshoots Explained:

Captain America: Brave New World wrapped principal photography before the WGA and SAG strikes last year, but the film's post-production was delayed. In December, Matthew Orton (Moon Knight) was hired to work on the new pages. Though reshoots once meant a film was performing poorly in test screenings, Marvel Studios has always scheduled additional photography to clarify questions that come up with test audiences.

"'Reshoots' was a bad word. 'Oh this movie's in reshoots, there must be a problem,'" Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously said of the process.

However, it's not exactly common for a film to add a new villain played by a big actor this late in the process. It seems likely that Esposito is eventually getting his own series, but is being introduced in Cap 4. We can only hope this is a positive for the production.

What Is Captain America: Brave New World About?

Captain America: Brave New World will follow the new adventures of Sam Wilson/Captain America (Anthony Mackie) following the events of The Falcon and Winter Soldier. The film will also star Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, and Shira Haas as Sabra. Xosha Roquemore, Seth Rollins, and Rosa Salazar have been cast in currently undisclosed roles.

"It kind of brought my Marvel experience full circle because we shot in D.C. at the same hotel that we shot 'Winter Soldier' at," Mackie said of the film in a previous interview with The Wrap. "One of my first Marvel scenes was me sitting at a table talking to the senator and me and Chris [Evans] and Scarlett [ Johansson] kidnapping him and we go back and we stay at the same hotel and we shot at that same area. So, in that regard, it was really emotional to think how far my character has come and where he is now after the 10 years that I've been in the MCU."

Stay tuned for more updates about Captain America: Brave New World, which is currently scheduled to be released on February 14, 2025.

Knives Out 3: Is Jeremy Renner Playing Himself in Wake Up Dead Man? https://comicbook.com/movies/news/knives-out-3-is-jeremy-renner-playing-himself-in-wake-up-dead-man/ Fri, 31 May 2024 21:14:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 2077b5f8-051b-40f5-8981-f001955d0d6f

Earlier this week, it was announced that Rian Johnson's third Benoit Blanc mystery starring Daniel Craig would be titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The film's casting announcements have been puring in, and the list includes Josh O'Connor, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Jeremy Renner, Mila Kunis, and Daryl McCormack. Renner is an especially interesting choice considering the previous film in the series, Glass Onion, referenced the actor. In the film, the Marvel star had his own brand of hot sauce, which ended up playing an important role in the film. Does that mean Renner could be playing himself in Wake Up Dead Man?

The plot of Wake Up Dead Man is currently unknown, but there are already a lot of theories going around online. While Renner does exist in the Knives Out universe, that hasn't stopped projects from using actors they've referenced before. A famous example of this is that the guys in Friends are big fans of Die Hard, but Bruce Willis appears on the show as a fictional character. In fact, this sort of happened in the Knives Out universe already...

In Knives Out, the hit musical Hamilton is referenced. In Glass Onion, Leslie Odom Jr., who originated the role of Aaron Burr in Hamilton on Broadway, played Lionel Toussaint. While Knives Out didn't mention Odom Jr. by name, the actor is pretty synonymous with Hamilton. He won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for playing Burr.

While it could be fun to see Renner in Wake Up Dead Man peddling some hot sauce, it feels like his role in the movie could go either way. Some fans are already speculating the actor could be the killer considering the murdererss in both Knives Out and Glass Onion were played by MCU stars: Chris Evans (Steve/RogersCaptain America) and Edward Norton (the original Bruce Banner/Hulk before Mark Ruffalo took over the role).

Wake Up Dead Man is Jeremy Renner's First Film Since His Accident:

At the start of 2023, Renner suffered serious injuries during a snowplow accident and underwent surgery. The actor spent most of last year recovering and sharing updates about his healing process. This year, Renner officially went back to work to film the third season of The Mayor of Kingstown. However, Johnson's Wake Up Dead Man marks the actor's first feature film since the accident.

National Treasure Director Addresses Nicolas Cage's Doubts About Third Movie https://comicbook.com/movies/news/national-treasure-director-addresses-nicolas-cages-doubts-about-third-movie/ Fri, 31 May 2024 20:04:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 75959ab3-8109-4abf-ad87-a748e5978b19

National Treasure director Jon Turteltaub recently appeared on the National Treasure Hunt podcast, and addressed the possibility of a third film. It's been 17 years since National Treasure: Book of Secrets was released, and fans are eager to see Nicolas Cage return to the role of Benjamin Franklin Gates. During the interview, Turteltaub said a script for the film was being written and added he "100%" hopes to get Cage back. However, he also admitted, "That doesn't mean it will be finished and be great." Cage has previously expressed interest in returning to the franchise, but Turteltaub did note the actor's supposed doubts about the threequel.

"I would start by saying I don't know if he's as pessimistic as you say he is," Turteltaub explained. "And if his quotes seemed pessimistic, sometimes 'cautious' might be a better word. Or 'not keeping his hopes up' is a better way of putting it. One of the reasons Nic feels that way is that he's been making movies for forty years and that's exactly how the movie business goes. Things mostly don't work out."

"So you go from... when you're twenty you have real enthusiasm, 'Your movie's going to get made! Your movie's going to get made!' And then eventually you're like, 'Maybe I don't know. When they tell me to show up for work then I know the movie is getting made.' But I'm not spending energy on thinking, hoping, and getting disappointed later," he continued.

"So I think what Nic is mostly thinking is, he's heard a thousand times, 'Oh, we're getting it made, we're going to do it. Great, the public wants it.' And then nothing happens. So when it happens, if it happens, he's going to be thrilled. It will be great. And I think we're going to make a good movie from what I can tell," Turteltaub added.

Earlier this year, Cage spoke with Deadline and revealed he was surprised Disney hadn't officially greenlit another National Treasure movie.

"Yeah, well, they're a lot of fun," Cage said of making the National Treasure films. "I mean, I enjoy them too, and I think Jon Turteltaub made a couple of classic films for the whole family. I'm still kind of amazed that Disney hasn't wanted to make a third one. I thought the movies brought a lot of joy to the public, and it's certainly interesting about history, and I think all of that is worthwhile filmmaking. You can dig deep and go into the more abstract stuff, like Bringing out the Dead, or Pig or even Dream Scenario, or you can open it up and make a movie that pleases a lot of people and hopefully gives families a chance to escape a little bit from whatever may be going on at home or in the office. I think they're all valid."

Michael Jackson Biopic Wraps Filming https://comicbook.com/movies/news/michael-jackson-biopic-wraps-filming/ Fri, 31 May 2024 18:15:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame d75a473d-97eb-4646-9f55-b2a8cd09922d

After about four months of filming, Michael -- the upcoming biopic about pop music icon Michael Jackson -- has wrapped principal photography. The film stars Jaafar Jackson, Michael's own nephew, in the lead role, and a star-studded cast. Relatively little has been publicly said about what parts of Jackson's life will and won't make it into the movie, although an official description of Jackson as "the man who became the King of Pop," coupled with Jaafar Jackson's age, may suggest that the movie will take an approach similar to Bohemian Rhapsody, laser-focusing in on a specific event or period in Jackson's life to treat it as a microcosm of his experience, rather than trying to tell a sprawling, epic story that covers the various stages of his life and fame.

At the same time, a Toys "R" Us storefront was built in Los Angeles during production, suggesting that some of Jackson's 1980s and 1990s well-publicized excesses are likely to make it in. That could push back the other way, suggesting a broader look at the star's life.

You can see a post from Discussing Film below.

What Is the Michael Jackson Biopic About?

Michael will bring audiences a riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became the King of Pop. The film presents his triumphs and tragedies on an epic, cinematic scale -- from his human side and personal struggles to his undeniable creative genius, exemplified by his most iconic performances. As never before, audiences will experience an inside look into one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known. Other crew members on the film will include Director of Photography Dion Beebe, Production Designer Barbara Ling, Costume Designer Marci Rodgers, Choreographers Rich + Tone, Makeup Artist Bill Corso, Hair Stylist Carla Farmer, Sound and Music Supervisor John Warhurst, and VFX Supervisor Louis Morin.

"Michael Jackson was inarguably one of the greatest entertainers of all time," said Adam Fogelson, Chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. "His impact on music, video, art, fashion, culture - and so much more - was extraordinary and is still profoundly relevant. I can't wait for audiences to be able to see this film in theaters worldwide next year."

Michael will be in theaters on April 18.

Knives Out 3 Adds Peaky Blinders Star https://comicbook.com/movies/news/knives-out-3-wake-up-dead-man-adds-peaky-blinders-daryl-mccormack/ Fri, 31 May 2024 17:56:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak aad6803b-b848-4b87-9d28-bc02450ff628

Ever since the title of Rian Johnson's third Benoit Blanc mystery was announced earlier this week, news of the film's cast has been pouring in. Many big names will be joining Daniel Craig in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and the latest casting announcement includes a Peaky Blinders alum. According to Variety, the ensemble cast has added Daryl McCormack, who is best known for playing Isiah Jesus in Peaky Blinders, Leo Grande in Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, and Detective Colman Akande in The Woman in the Wall.

The plot for Wake Up Dead Man is currently unknown, so McCormack's role in the project has yet to be revealed. However, the actor will be joined by Craig in addition to Josh O'Connor, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, Cailee Spaeny, Andrew Scott, Jeremy Renner, and Mila Kunis.

"The first one, [Johnson] had the idea for years in his head, but he only put pen to paper like late January and by end of October we were filming it, which is a super fast," producer Ram Bergman told ComicBook. "This movie, he really did not have an idea. He just stopped thinking and we were... From the moment he started really writing it, like, nine months later, a year later, we were filming. So, the good thing, he is very motivated to go do the next one as quickly as possible. But, you know, we'll see how fast he is but this is gonna be a challenge. It's gonna be a bigger challenge. So we'll see how long it's gonna take."

Jurassic World 4 Scores Manifest Star https://comicbook.com/movies/news/jurassic-world-4-manifest-luna-blaise-cast-mahershala-ali/ Fri, 31 May 2024 17:50:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 96936180-1280-45b0-8c07-ddd995eb9f50

Jurassic World 4 has reportedly added Luna Blaise from Manifest to the cast of the upcoming blockbuster. Universal ad Amblin are hard at work assembling the next group of humans to tangle with the dinosaurs in Jurassic World 4. Deadline reports that Blaise is set to join a stacked cast of Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend and more in the upcoming sequel. July 2, 2025 is the big day for Jurassic World 4 in theaters. The new movie will reportedly move on from Chris Pratt's recent trilogy despite the box office success of Jurassic World Dominion. (Bryce Dallas Howard is also free to pursue some other roles as well.)

The last entry in this franchise carried the air of a swan song for Jurassic Park proper. Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill all came back for the Jurassic World Dominion spectacle. Don't expect the original players to just be in every single one of these moving forward. While it's hard to anticipate it right now, that might be the case for Pratt as well. He's got so many projects lined-up that it is hard to see a path towards anything more than a cameo appearance at this point. (But, in an increasingly IP-driven media landscape, no goodbye is really forever anymore.) At any rate, Gareth Edwards' big entrance to Jurassic World continues to take shape.

Jurassic Park fans were legitimately shocked when Universal announced that Edwards would be taking the reins on Jurassic World 4. After some of the fervor died down, The Creator director talked about being the man behind the lens for our next trip to the dinosaur's home turf. Collider's recent FYC event saw Edwards reiterate his long-standing love of the franchise and everything it stands for. He was about to take a break after his big sci-fi movie last year. But, when Universal came calling with a lifelong dream, he couldn't really say no.

"I was about to take a break and I started writing my next idea for a film and this is the only movie that would make me drop everything like a stone and dive right in," Edwards told the fans and media in attendance. "I love Jurassic Park. I think the first movie is a cinematic masterpiece... so this opportunity is like a dream to me. And to work with Frank Marshall and Universal and David Koepp, who's writing that script, I think they're all legends. So I'm just very excited."

Alien: Romulus Director Offers New Character Details https://comicbook.com/horror/news/alien-romulus-character-details-backstory-fede-alvarez/ Fri, 31 May 2024 17:40:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 63b7c2bc-f0cb-44b7-bfd6-e056d28029d0

Horror fans know that the upcoming Alien: Romulus will be taking place between the events of Alien and Aliens and that it is billed as a spinoff more than as a direct continuation of anything else seen in the Alien franchise, though director Fede ?lvarez has now offered some new insight into the figures who will be tormented by the frightening xenomorph. The series has brought together groups of characters for a variety of reasons in the past, with ?lvarez explaining how the human Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and synthetic Andy (David Jonsson) came together and became an unlikely family. Alien: Romulus is set to hit theaters on August 16th.

"When [Rain's] father was dying, he left Andy to be a kind of caretaker," ?lvarez shared with Empire Magazine. "But Andy is a bit damaged and he's an older model. So more than a surrogate father, he becomes a younger brother to her. And that was always the heart of the story: this relationship between the two... and how that relationship unfolds once sh-t hits the fan."

In the original four movies, the main narrative connection is that the movies followed Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley, and while Romulus isn't narratively connected to the rest of the franchise, the filmmaker confirmed he made sure to include ways to tonally connect the dots between Alien and Aliens.

"To ask an Alien fan to choose between [Alien and Aliens] is a perverse question," the director joked. "So I thought, 'How do I do both?'"

He continued, "There's a moment where the characters are walking around areas familiar from the Nostromo ... Then they cross through that building and on the other side: boom! You're in a hallway that looks like Hadley's Hope [from Aliens]."

The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie's Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), Aileen Wu. Fede ?lvarez (Evil Dead, Don't Breathe) directs from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don't Breathe 2) based on characters created by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett.

Alien: Romulus lands in theaters on August 16th.

Return to Silent Hill Movie Gets First Full Trailer https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/return-to-silent-hill-movie-trailer/ Fri, 31 May 2024 17:26:00 +0000 Tanner Dedmon 6cb61132-4fd2-4d0b-9076-b353187aab62

Following a behind-the-scenes look at the movie shared on Thursday and a preview before that which showed off our first look at the new version of Pyramid Head, Return to Silent Hill finally has its first full trailer. The trailer for the Silent Hill movie showed off even more of Pyramid Head (or Red Pyramid, if you prefer) as well as other characters like our protagonist, James Sunderland, during his search for Mary. The Silent Hill movie does not yet have a release date, but the trailer ends by saying that Return to Silent Hill is "coming soon."

You can find the trailer below now that it's been shared by the official Silent Hill accounts on Friday. For those who tuned into the Silent Hill transmission that aired on Thursday, you'll recall seeing some behind-the-scenes segments there that have made their way into this trailer to better show how all the pieces fit together. Based on what's been shown so far, people seem keen on the new movie, perhaps more so than they are on the remake of Silent Hill 2.

https://x.com/SilentHill/status/1796572353041965063It's unclear why this was not shown off during the Silent Hill transmission on Thursday which would've given it its very own space to be presented as opposed to just putting it out in the world the next day. But again, people seem pretty lukewarm on the Silent Hill 2 game that Bloober Team is handling which just got a release date yesterday, so perhaps Silent Hill will be back in favor again now that this trailer is out.

Return to Silent Hill is meant to adapt the events of Konami's Silent Hill 2 and has been a long time coming now with rumors of a new Silent Hill movie circulating for years. It's directed and produced by Christophe Gans, the same director responsible for the 2006 Silent Hill movie as well as 2014's Beauty and the Beast and more. It wrapped filming several months ago, and while it does not have an official synopsis yet to indicate anything might be changing, Silent Hill fans should expect it to closely follow the events of Silent Hill 2.

Return to Silent Hill does not yet have a release date beyond a broad release window of 2024, but we'll likely get one soon now that the first trailer is out.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die Directors Address Spider-Man 4 Rumors https://comicbook.com/movies/news/bad-boys-ride-or-die-directors-address-spider-man-4-rumors/ Fri, 31 May 2024 16:40:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame d7f67ba6-677f-48b9-b2a3-5bb533820630

Bad Boys: Ride or Die filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah still can't talk about the possibility of making a Spider-Man movie very much, but during the Ride or Die premiere, ComicBook got at least a little bit more out of them than their previous no-comment on the question. The pair have already dipped their toes into the superhero pool -- although they don't have much to show for it. They directed Batgirl, which was almost complete when it was scrapped by Warner Bros. Discovery. With Spider-Man, everything about it is just a rumor (including that a movie is officially happening), but the filmmakers seem to suggest they haven't actually been approached.

That's a little different from the last time they talked about it, when Fallah suggested that he couldn't talk about anything -- which naturally convinced some fans that there was something to hide.

"It came out of nowhere, because we've got the Sony bosses here, and they didn't tell us anything!" El Arbi joked.

"I'm a superfan of Spider-Man, so you can imagine, when I was reading that, I was like, 'Whoa -- that would be cool,'" admitted Fallah.

ComicBook implored them to at least bring back Michael Keaton, who played The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the two filmmakers agreed it would be a great idea. The pair previously worked with Keaton on Batgirl before that movie was shelved by Warner Bros.

"We're going to bring Michael Keaton in everything now," Adil joked.

In Bad Boys: Ride or Die, wise-cracking Miami cops Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are back in action when they learn that their former captain was posthumously framed for working for a drug cartel, igniting a mission to uncover the truth of the conspiracy to find out who set up their late superior. Not only do they hope to restore the honor of their late captain, but also find out who set him up and who might be putting targets on their backs next.

Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola N??ez, Jacob Scipio, Joe Pantoliano, and DJ Khaled all return to star in the fourth entry in the series, which adds Tasha Smith, Eric Dane, Ioan Gruffudd, Melanie Liburd, and Tiffany Haddish. Bad Boys: Ride or Die also brings back Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Bad Boys: Ride or Die releases in theaters on June 7th.

Will Smith Talks Nostalgia and I, Robot Sequel https://comicbook.com/movies/news/will-smith-bad-boys-i-robot-sequel-interview/ Fri, 31 May 2024 16:33:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 8da1db87-ea0d-49c8-b1d4-27992d44dfe9

Bad Boys: Ride or Die star Will Smith addressed coming back for an I, Robot sequel. On the red carpet for the newest Bad Boys, the actor talked about nostalgia and its role in all these sequels getting made. Martin Lawrence also had some fun with the franchise's theme song as well. For Smith, who is already locking down an I Am Legend sequel with Michael B. Jordan, the pull towards old roles like the one he played in I, Robot is palpable coming from the fans. He knows that people love seeing their favorites on-screen again and Del Spooner isn't an exception. (Smith also had on the hat to match during our interview on the red carpet.) Check out his answer to the question up above and read it right here.

"You know, here's the deal, at this time in the world, nostalgia is so delicious," Smith began. "There are so many things going on in the world, a dose of nostalgia is going down sweet. I will humbly take my job, as an entertainer in this world, to give the people what they want."

Smith Already Eyeing I Am Legend 2

will-smith-michael-b-jordan-i-am-legend-2.jpg

As we mentioned previously, I Am Legend 2 is looking more realistic by the month. Late last year, Smith addressed the reports that Creed's Michael B. Jordan would be visiting the post-apocalyptic franchise during the Red Sea Film Festival. He didn't deny any of those rumors and managed to clarify how Jordan could be joining the project despite his character's apparent demise at the end of the original film. It turns out the fans who love the DVD alternate ending are going to have their day in the sun with I Am Legend 2. Now, all we need is confirmation that the script is all the way worked out and we'll be off to the races. Until then, fans are remaining hopeful that the story will hash itself out.

"I am having a call tomorrow with Michael B. Jordan about [I Am Legend]," Smith told that packed room. "You have to be a real I Am Legend buff to know this, but in the first, theatrical version, my character dies, but on the DVD there was an alternate version of the ending where my character lived. We are going with the mythology of the DVD version. I can't tell you anything more, but Michael B. Jordan is in."

Bad Boys: Ride or Die hits theaters June 5, 2024

The Lord of The Rings Movies Get a New Wave Of Funko Pops https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-lord-of-the-rings-movies-get-a-new-wave-of-funko-pops/ Fri, 31 May 2024 16:12:00 +0000 Sean Fallon 91e98c87-8613-4e2b-9443-bfd98a34ce95 psx-20240531-111040.jpg

Tolkien fans are going to be busy with new LOTR movies kicking off in 2026, The Rings of Power Season 2 launching on Amazon Prime Video August, and the Barad-D?r LEGO set dropping tonight. To top it all off, Funko has launched another big wave of Pop figures inspired by the Peter Jackson The Lord of the Rings films, and it includes the Mouth of Sauron, Treebeard with Merry and Pippin, Bilbo at Bag End and more. A full breakdown of the wave can be found in the list below complete with pre-order links:

The Rings Of Power Season 2 Sets The Stage For Even More

There was a ton of internal desire for Prime Video to get The Rings of Power Season 2 out of the door as quickly as possible. The head of Amazon Studios spoke to Variety about the material investment they've made in the show. Despite that massive buy in, they're also committed to "keeping the quality high" as they embark on Season 2. A lot of fans will be happy to hear of that when all these announcements are flying out from Prime Video this week. There was record turn out for The Lord of the Rings series. Here's what the head of Amazon Studios had to say about building the show for the long-haul.

"We're building infrastructure for five seasons. We're building a small city. We were always going to spend what we needed to spend to get it right," Salke explained. "I'm fortunate to be working at this company where we want to be financially disciplined, but nobody wanted to compromise on what this would be visually. I think it was all money really well spent. If you look at how people are reacting to the visual experience of the show, that's been overwhelmingly positive."

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 premiers on Prime Video August 29th.

McFarlane Toys DC Multiverse The Dark Knight Trilogy Tumbler Vehicles Are On Sale Now https://comicbook.com/movies/news/mcfarlane-toys-dc-multiverse-the-dark-knight-trilogy-tumbler-vehicles-drop-on-may-31st/ Fri, 31 May 2024 16:03:00 +0000 Sean Fallon 9bfb1e0e-5574-4820-9a17-35d5097835ae psx-20240530-152930.jpg

McFarlane Toys is set to drop two new 7-inch scale vehicles in their DC Multiverse Gold Label lineup - the Camouflage Tumbler from The Dark Knight Rises and Lucius Fox and Tumbler 2-pack from The Dark Knight. The catch is that both will be exclusives, and when it comes to Batman-themed releases of this nature, that generally means that they will sell out very quickly. The good news is that a restock is likely, though it might take some time. This was the case with the '89 Batmobile that McFarlane Toys launched last year. UPDATE: The Camo Tumbler is now available to pre-order here on Amazon priced at $69.99. The 2-pack is available here at the McFarlane Toys store for $99.99.

ORIGINAL: That said, both vehicles will be available to pre-order on May 31st, most likely around 12pm ET. A price hasn't been announced, but we would expect both to retail for at least $70, with the 2-pack likely fetching more because of the additional figure. The Camouflage Tumbler will be an Amazon exclusive, and should be available to order right here. The Lucius Fox and Tumbler 2-pack will be a McFarlane Toys Store exclusive. Direct links will be added here after the launch, so stay tuned!

While you're at it, mark your calendar for June 7th because McFarlane Toys is set to launch pre-orders for a Batman Forever Build-A-Wave series of figures. Odds are they will be available at retailers like Entertainment Earth on that day, so stay tuned to this page for additional information as we get closer to the event. Note that McFarlane Toys previously released a Val Kilmer Batman figure as part of the Batman Ultimate Movie Collection set.

psx-20240528-112512.jpg

Finally, McFarlane Toys launched a Darkseid (DC Classic) Megafig in their DC Multiverse earlier this week and it sold out in a heartbeat. Keep tabs here at Entertainment Earth and here on Amazon for restocks. The figure is priced at $39.99.

"The DC Collector Megafig Wave 8 Darkseid DC Classic Action Figure features ultra articulation with up to 22 moving parts for full range of posing and play. Darkseid is featured in his classic DC Comics look and is in scale with the 7-inch figures in the DC Multiverse line (sold separately). Darkseid comes with a soft goods cape, extra hands, extra head portrait, and display base. Also included is a collectable card with artwork on the front, and a character biography on the back."

RoboCop: Part Man, Part Machine, All Funko Pop https://comicbook.com/movies/news/robocop-part-man-part-machine-all-funko-pop/ Fri, 31 May 2024 16:03:00 +0000 Sean Fallon 6c9d80bb-e36f-43a1-b1ab-4e071837f573 psx-20240531-101207.jpg

The last time Funko launched a RoboCop Pop figure was way back in 2013, and it was a single figure of Alex Murphy. Today they delivered a full wave that includes RoboCop without his mask, the villain Clarence Boddicker, and a super-sized ED-209 in the common lineup. However, the most coveted Pop of the collection will undoubtedly be the exclusive metallic RoboCop in his full armor.

The metallic RoboCop Funko Pop is an Entertainment Earth exclusive that you can pre-order right here while it lasts. Inside that link you'll also find the common figures. Note that US shipping is free on orders $79+. If you prefer, you can grab the commons right here on Amazon as well. You can check out more of this week's new Funko Pop releases right here.

Will There Be Another RoboCop Reboot?

Last year, reports claimed that Amazon was considering a new RoboCop movie and TV series, though news has been scarce on that front as of late. We have to imagine that it will happen at some point, though they would be wise to avoid the issues that plagued the 2014, PG-13 reboot starrting Joel Kinnaman:

"It was a cool experience. I think if I would have done it now, I think I would have inserted myself more into it," Kinnaman confirmed to ComicBook.com while promoting his new film Silent Night. "I love [director] Jos?'s [Padilha] concept into it. The one thing, I think, was lacking in that film, I like to be self-critical, I think that it was one of those films where I think, we who made it didn't fully take into account what RoboCop was for the fans. Tonally, that sort of [Paul] Verhoeven satire, because it's so ingrained in the RoboCop franchise and its being. It's different when a new filmmaker comes in and puts his voice on it, and Jos? had a very clear image of what he wanted to do, it was an anti-Empirialistic take, and I think that movie would have done better if we had listened more to the fans beforehand. But I think it stands alone ... I almost think the RoboCop film we did would have been a better movie if it wouldn't have been named 'RoboCop.'"

Original RoboCop director Paul Verhoeven had his own take on the reboot:

"The problem there, I felt, was that he was really aware that he lost all his legs and arms. He knows it from the very beginning," Verhoeven shared with Metrograph. "The beautiful thing about the original RoboCop, what makes it not just pure tragedy or whatever, is that he really does not know anymore. He gets a couple of vague flashes of memory when he goes to his old house, but RoboCop is not a tragic figure. Yes, he's killed in the most horrible way in the beginning. But when we see him again as a robot, he doesn't feel that. In the new one, because he remembers everything, he's much more tragic. We wanted you to accept him at the beginning as a robotic cop. That's what they did to him. In my opinion, I thought it was a problem to make him more tragic."

Martin Lawrence Still Hasn't Learned the Lyrics to Bad Boys https://comicbook.com/movies/news/martin-lawrence-still-hasnt-learned-the-lyrics-to-bad-boys/ Fri, 31 May 2024 16:00:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 83f61b21-0bbd-44d4-8a9c-08d53f218092

"Bad Boys" by Inner Circle is one of the most iconic songs in popular culture, having been the theme to Cops for over thirty years and also to the long-running blockbuster Bad Boys film franchise. It's so instantly recognizable, that most Americans over the age of 25 could probably sing part of its driving, repetitive chorus by heart. ("Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?") The thing is, as recognizable as the song is, a significant percentage of people would probably peter out after roughly that many words. Including, it seems, Bad Boys star Martin Lawrence.

Bad Boys isn't the only song like that, of course. Most people can remember Smash Mouth's "All Star" lyrics from the beginning of Shrek but probably wouldn't be able to finish the tune, and a number of politicans over the years have embarrassed themselves by misunderstanding Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." But during the Bad Boys: Ride or Die premiere, ComicBook asked Lawrence if he had taken time out yet to familiarize himself beyond just the hook of the song.

"I haven't, I haven't," Lawrence admitted. "I love the part I know."

Laughing, Lawrence's co-star Will Smith came to the rescue, saying, "The thing is, Bad Boys...we solve crimes so fast, we don't need the rest of the song. Once we've got the hook, it's solved."

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Winona Ryder Shares New Details About Lydia's Return https://comicbook.com/movies/news/beetlejuice-2-winona-ryder-interview-lydia-deetz-return-story-tv-show/ Fri, 31 May 2024 15:06:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 28c0cb16-b334-4784-815e-8bbc2934d298

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will bring back Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, the goth girl whose fascination with the paranormal had her stumble into the world of the afterlife and almost become the bride of Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice. We know that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will have Lydia as a mother to her teenage daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), but there's also more to Lydia's continuing story.

Winona Ryder (along with the rest of the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice cast) is getting some feature attention in Empire Magazine. During the interviews, Ryder shared a few more details about where we find Lydia in the Beetlejuice sequel.

"I went through so many stages of, 'Who is she now?', but I always wanted to have it be Lydia. She can't lose who she was," Ryder explained to Empire. "She can't be the same person, she can't be just completely deadpan, she has to have evolved, but she also has to have kept that thing she had when we first met her. So that was the big challenge for me."

One of the big changes in Lydia's life (besides motherhood) is that she now has Elvira-style TV series called Ghost House With Lydia Deetz. If you watch the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer, you can catch a small snippet of Lydia doing the show - a great reflection of all the paranormal reality series (ex: Ghost Hunters) that have come along since the original Beetlejuice's release. Given Lydia's experience with seeing the afterlife, she is uniquely suited to offer expertise on the subject - although we suspect the reception from the Internet wouldn't be universally glowing.

Behind the scenes, Ryder admitted that getting back into the character was hard - especially after so much real life has passed since she first played the role. "You know, you grow up, and things change. Life happens."

Still, the process of making the Beetlejuice sequel seems to have been a breakthrough experience for Ryder. She echoes Michael Keaton and director Tim Burton in her excitement over what they've done with the sequel.

"I struggle to find the words. It's just one of the most special experiences that I've ever had. The fact that we're coming back to it, it's... It's beyond," Ryder explained. "I don't know if I've ever felt this way. This is a first for me. I've never revisited a character, ever."

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in theaters on September 6th.

Pixar Addresses Future Disney+ Movie Projects https://comicbook.com/movies/news/pixar-disney-plus-inside-out-future-movie-projects-finding-nemo/ Fri, 31 May 2024 14:42:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 562ed0dd-ebfd-4a36-93a1-4fed16e1ec32

Pixar's president discussed his gut feelings about Disney+. Yesterday, Bloomberg reported that Pixar was mulling the idea of a reboot for popular franchises like The Incredibes and Finding Nemo. Now, there are some quotes from Jim Morris about staying away from releasing big movies on the streaming platform. Disney+ enjoyed the launches of Soul, Luca and Turning Red during the last few years. While all of these titles reviewed well, and audiences largely inside remember them well, they didn't get to enjoy much box office success. Now, Morris is hoping that their new crop of films, starting with Inside Out 2 will not have to pass that hurdle.

"I hope that we will not release another feature film on Disney+," Pixar President Jim Morris told the outlet. "If we do more stuff for Disney+, it should be a series, and then that makes a clean demarcation between what we do for theaters and what we do for streaming."

A lot of this comes from the box office perception around some of Pixar's recent releases. Clearly, the studio is considering taking a trip down memory lane if Inside Out 2 doesn't perform better than titles like Elemental and Lightyear. (You could probably toss Soul and Turning Red in there as well. Although, they got shuffled off to Disney+ because of executive mandates rather than box office performance.) Disney and its studios are doing everything possible to orient people back towards theaters and massive IP reboots would be the sort of thing nostalgia-driven viewers would turn up for. Keep in mind that it's been a long while since The Incredibles or Finding Nemo graced multiplexes.

Disney Leaning Even Further Into Franchises

Disney has not been shy about the idea of leaning into the franchises that made it such a juggernaut in the present. This goes beyond Pixar, but those massive animated features have been talked about a lot with the CEO and other decision makers. Earlier this year, during an investor call, Bob Iger told shareholders that they could expect Toy Story 5, Frozen 3, and a new Zootopia movie all on deck for the next few years. If this Finding Nemo comes to pass, you should also expect that in the near future too.

Iger told the collected press and shareholders, "And today, I'm so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises: Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia. We'll have more to share about this production soon, but this is a great example of how we're leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises."

"And so, with that goal in mind, we will focus even more on our core brands and franchises, which have consistently delivered higher returns. We will aggressively curate our general entertainment content," the executive continued. "We will reassess all markets we have launched in and also determine the right balance between global and local content. We'll adjust our pricing strategy, including a full examination of our promotional strategies."

The Dead Don't Hurt Star Danny Huston Opens Up About Working With Director Viggo Mortenson https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-dead-dont-hurt-danny-huston-working-with-director-viggo-mortenson/ Fri, 31 May 2024 14:36:00 +0000 Timothy Adams 890d7a67-134b-4785-8807-1aa6244fc10f

Danny Huston recalls what it was like to work with Viggo Mortenson on The Dead Don't Hurt. Mortenson is a jack of all trades, writing, directing, and starring in The Dead Don't Hurt, a Toronto International Film Festival selection. The Western takes place during the Civil War and also stars Vicky Krieps in a complicated love story. Legendary actor Danny Huston stars in The Dead Don't Hurt as Mayor Rudolph Schiller, and is also a director in his own right. This gives him the perfect knowledge of the highs and lows of being behind the camera, and gives him the insight into what Mortenson went through during production.

ComicBook spoke to Danny Huston about The Dead Don't Hurt, where he was asked how Viggo Mortenson's directing style compared to other directors he's worked with, as well as what are the benefits of working with a director who is also an actor.

"I felt very protected by Viggo because he wrote the screenplay, he acted in it, but he also wrote the music, so he's kind of embracing the film," Huston said. "To have that clarity of vision is a wonderful thing as an actor. The film was shot under a certain schedule, it was shot in Durango, in Mexico, so we also had the elements to contend with, so sometimes I could see the wheels turning from wearing many hats. I described it as him being slightly schizophrenic. He disagreed with that description [laughs]."

He added, "You're kind of holding each other up in a sense. It creates a sort of waltz. You're there to help each other out."

Danny Huston on starring in movie reboots

Danny Huston stars as the villain in the upcoming reboot of The Crow, which hits theaters later this year. In 2025, he'll appear in the reboot of The Naked Gun, which is gearing up for production. While speaking to ComicBook about The Dead Don't Hurt, his new movie hitting theaters on May 31st, Huston opened up about the challenges that come with remaking a popular title.

"What I find challenging is, in a way, the idea of remaking something that's already good," Huston told ComicBook. "It's like you kind of don't want to touch it. You want to leave it alone. I remember my father saying, 'Why are we remaking good movies? We should be remaking the bad ones and make them good.' So that's where you're cautious. And yet you have to kind of reinvent it. You can't imitate it. But you're inspired by it and that's the tough balance to get."

The Dead Don't Hurt is in theaters nationwide on May 31.
